Police in Shimoda, Shizuoka Prefecture, have arrested a 26-year-old man on suspicion of stealing 600,000 yen in cash from a wallet in a bag that was left in the toilet at a convenience store in July.
According to police, a 55-year-old man left the bag in the toilet in late July, NTV reported. Later in the day, when he went back looking for it, he saw that cash had been taken from his wallet, and filed a complaint with police.
Police said they analyzed store surveillance camera footage and identified the suspect who went into the toilet after the bag owner left the store.
Police said the suspect, a company executive from Naus, Tochigi Prefecture, has admitted to the theft and quoted him as saying, "I wanted money to spend for leisure."

Finders, keepers.

What about Law 16.2 Subsection 4a: Finders keepers?
Nasu?

There are no "finders, keepers" in Japan.

Duh, wallace. It's a joke.

The kind of person who would leave it in a convenience store toilet.

How can you fit that amount inside a wallet?
owzer
You can fit 1 million yen in some long style wallets. Foldable, and you’re looking at trouble over 200,000.

Yes and no. Lots of people keep what they find, contrary to popular belief, and those who are good enough to turn it in get or at least expect an award for it, or are given what they find to keep if no one claims it (at a police station, for example).

You beat me to it.
In any case, I always find with cases like these that if the person who takes/gets the money is caught, they should be forced to return it, but that should be the end of it -- it should be a wake-up call for the person who left it, especially when it's obscene amounts of cash like this ¥600,000, or when local city government's forward millions into your account by accident, or what have you.

Man forgets wallet with 2.8 million yen in cash on Japan’s busiest train line

You have often shown your lack of humour , however, lost property handed into the police in Japan if not claimed within 6 months will become the property of the finder. Also the finder is entitled to claim 20% of the cash value if they wish. Most don't.

I take what people post at face value. There are many people who believe "finders keep it" and don't hand it into the police. However, yes if not claimed after six months the find is returned. If claimed there is a 15% reward.

I could see if the money was just laying there, but this "company executive" had the nerve to go through the bag and then pull it out of the wallet. This jerk deserves a wake-up call himself.

Jail for that loser clown..

It sounds like a drug deal or maybe even a hit where the other party failed to show. Leaving 600k in a wallet, which is in bag in a toilet, certainly sounds fishy to me. Remember the toilet scene from the Godfather?

This amount of money is very common in Japan. People here are mostly expats who dont realize just how wealthy Tokyo is as a city.
Despite constant propaganda on "low wages" most Japanese have no problems dropping 500k regularly on night outs

Even when it's clearly presented as a joke? I mean, "Law 16.2 Subsection 4a?" Come on, wallace.
