Police in Kashiwa, Chiba Prefecture, have arrested a 31-year-old unemployed man on suspicion of stealing belongings from people in internet cafes on at least 61 occasions in three prefectures.
According to police, Sho Endo, of no fixed address, has admitted to the charge, Kyodo News reported. Police said he stole items such as wallets containing credit cards, personal IDs, membership cards and so on from private rooms in net cafes in Tokyo, Saitama and Chiba prefectures between November 2020 and March 2021. Police said Endo stole about 2.72 million yen in cash.
Police quoted Endo as saying he needed the money for living expenses. He told police he would wait until the occupant of a private room at a net cafe stepped out to go to the toilet, then he would sneak in and steal anything of value.
Endo was initially arrested on suspicion of stealing a wallet with three credit cards and 150,000 yen in it from a net cafe in Kashiwa last July. Police said he was identified after an analysis is surveillance camera footage and when questioned, admitted to the other thefts.

Things are getting tough out there for people due to the pandemic and the war in Ukraine and other variables such as the lack of the Japanese Government willing to assist its citizens through all this mess.

He was unemployed and homeless because more then likely he was a lazy bum. Damn near anyone can get a grunt-work construction job at the very least or a job in a conbini. Go out and earn your money.

Safety Japan. Crimes like this only happen in those far away foreign places, or so I've been told.

Let me add a point to the politics taking all the money that coyld be issued to help bad luck in life citizens, they use their status state job credit card to fill all family member cars with fuel, for free. Stealing was made as an anrisocial behave by lack of oportunities, disfunctional people are out there. Stay away from me please.

@Rodney You answered your own question, the people who take ¥150,000 to an Internet cafe, known for homeless people do this because this is there home. Homeless People live in these places!!! Perhaps the person had a part time job and was trying to save money to get a place and used the IC as temporary shelter until they could move out duh!!

When you start reading about the increased amount of the lowest of low crimes committed daily by ordinary citizens then its time to get worried because it indicates more people are being affected by the economy. Robbery, theft and burglary will be most issues!!
