A 61-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting and robbing a woman in her 20s in a hotel in Tokyo last month.
Police said Masahide Namba, a barber from Mitaka City in Tokyo, approached the woman on the street near Okubo Park in the Kabukicho district of Shinjuku on May 27, and lured her to a hotel by promising to pay her money, NHK reported.
Police said that as soon as they were in the hotel room, Namba threatened the woman with a knife, saying he would kill her if she didn't do as he said. He stole tens of thousands of yen in cash from the woman and then allegedly sexually assaulted her between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m. He also took a photo of the woman's ID with his smartphone.
Namba emerged as a suspect after police analyzed surveillance camera footage. He was detained near Toyoko Tower on Sunday night. Police said Namba has denied the charge and quoted him as saying, “I don’t remember doing such a thing.”
According to police, there have been several similar cases in the Kabukicho area, mainly in summer last year. At that time, there were a series of posts on social networking sites warning of a man with a knife threatening women around Okubo Park.
