A 21-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after he beat a 55-year-old man unconsciousness following a dispute outside JR Kameido Station in Tokyo’s Koto Ward.
The victim, Seiji Ishii, died in hospital on Monday.
According to police, the incident occurred at around 5:25 a.m. Saturday near the bus stop outside the station. Sankei Shimbun reported that the suspect, Ryo Shida, a scrap worker, shoved Ishii to the ground and kicked him.
Police said Ishii remained in a coma until he died on Monday.
Police said Shida, who was drunk at the time of his arrest, has admitted to the charge and quoted him as saying he and Ishii were passing by each other when they glared at each other. He said Ishii's umbrella hit him in the face, which annoyed him.

Unfortunate. It's becoming scary to be out past 10pm~6 or 7am, when the drunk buffoons are on the loose. Also, you have to be mindful of where you're walking. A lot of people in Tokyo have no perception of personal space, and have no qualms about invading another persons' personal space. With that being said, this guy didn't deserve to be knocked out over this...

Me Shuda was hit in the face by an umbrella so he kicked the guy unconscious!
Really?

"skirmish" should not be the word for this...the old man did not even had the chance to fight, he was shoved to the ground and left unconscious.

You're judgement is based on the words of the assailant and for that matter
a drunk one.
There are always two sides to a story, hope the 55 year recovers.

55 is the age of the stone-faced oyaji, who believe they are untouchable. I would not be at all surprised if he hit the young in the face on purpose and got a smack down in retaliation.

i have a serious problem with umbrellas. I'm taller than the average japanese, so i have a never ending problem of not losing an eye. having said that, a push may be ok to a bad mannered old man, but to kick him on the ground should mean jail.

55 is not an "old man." I have no idea whether he smacked the younger guy in the face with an umbrella. That certainly would tick most people off. But I have also met a fair number of "scrap workers." Scrapyards are almost entirely yak connected, and the young workers tend to be on the thuggish and not too bright side. So he may well have been just looking for trouble after a few drinks.

But not drunk enough to hammer a guy senseless? Don't know about you, but when I've been drunk, it's been all I could do to stay vertical. Physical assault on another individual would definitely have been beyond me...

They should force the punk to watch Mary Poppins re-runs for 20 years or until he is pacified.

Boys being boys. They never grow up, you know?
Not really.
That said; the weekend exacerbates violence (in any city) so whilst unpleasant, it's not surprising.
Hope the victim recovers soon.

i see these older guys walking around with their inflated sense of self entitlement glaring at everyone else. my money is on him hitting the lad on purpose, or at least not even apologizing... the boy lost it and decked him. when he recovers he will tell his side of the story

Japan is still super-safe after dark. Just don't stare down drunk laborers, and you'll be fine.
It's still hard to believe that with Japan's quality education and social indoctrination through repetition of words and actions, there are still a few thugs left in society. Just boggles the mind.

Scrap worker, hmmm. A shot in the dark and guess his IQ is around 90-95?
Drinking lowers the IQ by about 20 points, so that would put him in low IQ percentile which just happens to be the most violent group of humans‥…… GENIUS!
