Man killed, woman in coma after crashing car while being pursued by police

A man was killed and a woman was seriously injured after the car they were in crashed while they were being pursued by a police car in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, police said Thursday.

According to police, the chase began at around 11 p.m. Wednesday. A patrol car spotted the vehicle driving along a prefectural road with the left front headlight off, Fuji TV reported. Police asked the driver to pull over but instead, the car sped off.

The police car sounded its siren and pursued the car. After about 1.5 kilometers, the car hit a road divider steel pole. The two occupants -- a 37-year-old man, identified as Takeo Anzai, and a 31-year-old woman -- were thrown clear as the car burst into flames.

Police said Anzai died early Thursday in hospital, while the woman was in a coma.

I wonder how fast they were going when they hit. That car is a mess, and thrown clear, probably means they weren't wearing seat belts, which from the looks of the car, wouldn't have mattered much anyway.

Didn't put the seatbelts on even when they fled from the police. Not that it would have helped in this csse but they weren't thinking about anything but getting away. Why the big fear of police?

Judging by the damage, the vehicle was at, or near its maximum speed (150~200 kilometres per hour) when it crashed into the road divider steel pole.

What kind of car do you think that was.

Its likely the reason why why he didn’t stop us because he had been drinking. His error of judgement cost him his life and possibly the life of his seriously injured partner. He should have fixed the headlight. It only costs a couple of thousand yen. Now, it’s cost him his life.

I drove out to Chigasaki before, even in NORMAL traffic it's a nightmare.

EVADING the Police ? no thanks.....I never even got a ticket before.

And all the police probably would done is tell the driver his headlight wasn't working then moved on. I had the same exact thing happen years back.

A high speed pursuit for a broken head light?

No seatbelts, and running from the police over nothing. Hard to feel sympathy. At least if the woman lives she'll be jailed for a long time.

Looks like it's Toyota Prius car.

Therewere probably other reasons that he didn't want to talk to the police. There is a strong correlation between minor car crime and other issues.

A dumb and an unlucky woman who chose to go out with a dumb.

No seat belts but not sure if they would have helped.

well deserved end, and btw why the posters above blame the man? nowhere mentions who was driving, might as well be the woman...

We could never get my father to wear a seatbelt after he had an accident in which he was thrown clear and the steering wheel went through the seat . So he would have been killed if he had been wearing one.

Having said that, when I'm driving the car doesn't move until everyone's buckled up.
