Perhaps Beat should review any previous correspondence of what this perp ‘imagined’ were ‘conversations’ between them? Obviously, erroneous ‘thoughts’ can be repeated in a delusional-mind, even misdirected at the wrong individual for something the perp initially may have ‘misread’, ‘misinterpreted’ or ‘felt’ when they were perhaps rebuffed their intended ‘target’. This inner dialogue could go back months, years, or, as little as just one week. Others may have noted a change in behaviors and speech. Never the less, it’s not society’s fault. His chosen behaviors escalated to becoming psychotic:
Still, “*Nothing for most to worry about.*”
BackpackingNepal
(2021) The Outrage 4 - The Pickaxe
But I like only his 4 films, Boiling Point, A Scene at the Sea, Kids Return and Kikujiro.
Newgirlintown
Well, he is never off the tv.
Nagoyajin
Beat Takeshi is an entitled creep. He lacks class, humility & manners. His “humor” is 3 Stooges level. He gives comedy a bad name.

A targeted individual should probably be more careful with what they say about people.
Paybacks with a pickaxe !
Chottobaka
LARP or creative audition?
smithinjapan
Wonder if that's why he thought it would be cool to wear a Hitler costume on TV today.
snowymountainhell
“Ridiculous comment.” ? - “Japan is still a relatively ‘safe’ country for many.” - This was ‘an isolated crime” against one person of ‘some notoriety’.
How about “*Nothing for most to worry about.” Is that ‘comfortable’? Many similar, critical posts re Japan today. Certainly, Kitano is now considering his personal *safety from this point forward..

Enter him to the Battle Royale!

A prison term for this crazy guy cannot be avoided. This was a dangerous attack, using a pickaxe and a knife as weapons.
coskuri
The perp looks more crazy than professional.
sir_bentley28
Also, a pickaxe? Either somebody has been playing a little too much Minecraft or hes an old prospector!
Sven Asai
I guess, now it takes that guy quite another time for entering the world of show business. But he very quickly made it into the news, so that proves there’s always hope. lol

Perpetrator seems smarter than many posters

He must attract strange people, but considering his beginning it's not surprising! I do not like him as an entertainer, all his shows are sadistic. I do not understand why people find that funny. But I liked his performance as Zatoichi the black comedy and the rhythm of the movie, the soundtrack and the cast is great! I also liked him in Brother. But the Outrage trilogy is more of a how to kill encyclopedia, he seems to have gotten the idea from Black Rain, but no real story to tell.

Relatively safe country ?
Ridiculous comment.
Safer than the big island if thats what you mean.
Pick axe is not only used for mining by the way.
sir_bentley28
You're doing that in front of the wrong person! Go find Harvey Weinstien!

Begging to enter the world of show business ?
That's just pathetic !
Some people will do anything to get a little attention.
Jelousey is dangerous.
Gaijinjland
Kitano is one of the few Japanese stars I respect. Most of his films are nihilistic and dark but on TV he has this goofy persona. A man who wears many hats.
Karyuudo
You want to enter the world of entertainment? Well congratulations you're now on the front page of the news.

Beat Takeshi is an overrated, unfunny, sick individual who makes decent gangster films, but is an utter failure as a comedian and TV "talent."
But I don't wish violence on anyone.
3RENSHO
In the 1994 accident, Kitano was drunk and crashed a motorbike that he had borrowed from a friend.
ebisen
Must be the karma debts, all those idiotic Comaneci signs coming back to him.
BeerDeliveryGuy
He should’ve used a plastic squeaky hammer.
WA4TKG
He’s still alive?
Peter Neil
I remember the TV news that it was a motorbike, not a motorcycle.

Another day, another crazy out on the streets of Tokyo - this time with a pickaxe.
On a side note, to all your wackos who believe someone else owes you a shot at fame and fortune. There are literally as many talent agencies in Tokyo as there are days in the year. Pick a handful, make an appointment to submit an application, have them take your photos for a comp card, and actually work on developing some kind of "talent" - be that acting, voiceover, whatever. Even the average Joe Blow from anywhere can get background work here.
Trinity
Quite right. I’d like to take credit for the “miner” part, but credit where its due!

Good one. I can just picture the police report now: When asked why he had a miners hat on, the suspect replied, incredulously, 'to see in the dark?'

The price he pays for being arrogant. A lesson to all celebrities!

Beat takeshi has been so incredibly overrated his whole career, it isn't even funny.

Better on than off!
LOL!

The assailant’s juvenile expectations & choice of weapon indicates he may have been a miner, but reportedly he’s in his 40’s.
LOL!

Doesn’t this story read like a J version of Martin Scorsese’s 1982 The King of Comedy or, Todd Phillips 2019 Joker ?
ian
Probably the man correctly surmised that he won't be able to catch Beat in the open so brought a pickaxe to bash the vehicle

From mid June until mid September is always silly season here, with a surfeit of heat triggered craziness predictable as clockwork. The cooler weather heralds a return to relative normality and back to the pressures that foreshadow next year’s fun and games.

Serious mental case here.

Glad no one was hurt. Odd choice, pickaxe, though. Not exactly a weapon of opportunity late night in the parking lot and driveways of TBS. Let's see if I can channel a little bit of Beat's kind of humor: Nothing defines the true do-it-yourselfer more that a good quality pickaxe, whether it be for that special garden project or for showing that popular comedian that your truly care.
Helix
Someone tried to beat on Takeshi.
Lots of gratuitous violence in his films.
Iron Lad
These news are getting crazier and crazier, maybe Japan society is getting some serious mental outbreak.
lolozo79
Exactly. From a "western perspective" he'd be upheld as a whistleblower of sorts.
Back in the day, my friend.
borscht
Takeshi also (had a group of his goons) beat up a newspaper reporter who had something bad to say about Beat.
Luddite
The attacker has a massive sense of entitlement. I would have ignored him too, obviously has issues.
factchecker
He's a comedian? Never heard anything funny uttered from his mouth. Doesn't deserve to be attacked with a pickaxe though no matter how bad his act is.
lolozo79
For better or for worse, he is Japan's Terry Wogan/George Stephanopoulos. His on-screen antics of buffoonery/bravado is what is expected in Japan's 芸能界. Let us not forget that he is also an accomplished movie director/actor. Great performance in "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence". He deserves, at least, a modicum of respect.
drlucifer
In a country that almost everyone is scared to speak their mind Beat Takeshi is one of the few that you can count on your one hand that speaks us mind without being scared of anyone and is humorous as well.
Mark
Disturbing news.
nandakandamanda
Takeshi has a cruel and bullying streak which turns me off.
The attacker must have long worshipped him, and then festered inside after that cold initial rejection in an off-beat and inappropriate setting. Not a leg to stand on.
ShinkansenCaboose
The first time I saw him push men wanting to become famous into bathtubs of boiling hot water, laughing about it and holding them down in it I lost respect for him.
But I soon learned Japanese humor is often based on bullying, hurting, hitting, punching, torturing, and humiliating people, so I accept it now as a cultural thing.
Glad he is ok. Hope it made him think about all the pain he has given others.
lolozo79
Is that why ''7 days'' was cancelled on Saturday ? Much respect to Mr. Kitano, a man of humble origins who became a cultural icon. He not only made me laugh with his quirky, down to earth persona, but has survived and thrived in Japan's cutthroat show biz world. Glad he was unharmed. I wonder whether the perp knew him personally ?
Alcea Hexa
Kitano is a treasure, glad he is ok. It would just be too much if something happened to him

@jder
You're just saying or you're not saying? What are you trying to say?
Seemed a bit amateurish to be a professional
igfklin
The culprit volunteered to become Kitano's apprentice in June, but was ignored.

Not saying that Beat Takeshi is involved in organized crime, but could the attacker have been a Yakuza hitman sent as payback for activities Takeshi's may have done in the seedy, unseen, underbelly of Japanese showbiz? I'm just saying.
NOMINATION
Something Beat Takeshi knows a thing or 2 about. Remember it was him that went after someone with a bat which ended up with him getting in an accident and partial face paralysis.
snowymountainhell
Can’t beat the number of person-on-person crimes in the J news as of late. Yet, many victims knew their assailants. Still, this is beyond outrage for the general public. Possibly an alleged “brother” or violent ex cop with an axe to grind against Kitano. - Regardless, wishing him many happy returns.
snowymountainhell
Good to hear no one was hurt. Japan is still a relatively ‘safe’ country for many.

Playing minecraft too much ?
Fighto!
Awful news.
I hope they lock this psycho up, and that Beat is OK.
