Taxi passenger flies into rage after accusing driver of going wrong way

22 Comments

Police in Sapporo are looking for a man who got into a violent dispute with a taxi driver and then fled without paying the fare.

A dashboard camera inside the taxi captured the incident which occurred on Monday night, Hokkaido Shimbun reported. The male passenger can be seen raging inside the vehicle from beginning to end. Footage shows the abusive passenger not only yelling at the male taxi driver, but also violently kicking the driver’s seat.

Police said the man got into the taxi at Susukino just before 11 p.m., and soon began arguing with the driver, insisting he was going the wrong way to his destination. After a few minutes, the passenger ordered the driver to stop. He then kicked the door, got out without paying the 990 yen fare and threw his smartphone at the taxi before fleeing the scene.

The taxi driver was quoted by police as saying, “I was completely shocked [by the incident]. Going on a rampage doesn’t resolve anything, but [the passenger] kept on kicking anyway.”

According to the taxi company, the plastic partition between the driver and back seat was also damaged.

On Wednesday, the taxi operator filed a damage report with police. Damage to the taxi is estimated at about 140,000 yen.

Wouldn't it speed up the manhunt a bit if the face of the culprit hadn't been obscured? I'd say he's lost his right to anonymity with this one.

@Kobe

But not just any taxi.

A finely-crafted jewel in the traditional Sapporo style, incorporating years of tradition and dedication, designed to endure well into the next decade.

Priceless. Timeless. Peerless.

And worth every yen....

What is it with Japanese guys and their penchant to attack taxi drivers?

What is it with Japanese guys and their penchant to attack taxi drivers?

Well taxi drivers get attacked in pretty much every country - it's hardly specific to Japan. I would guess that reasons why include that many passengers will be drunk when they get in, otherwise they would be making their own way home.

I saw the clip on the news this morning. That guy was screaming and kicking the whole time. I really felt bad for the driver, who managed to maintain his cool. The guy must have had too much to drink, at least I hope so. I'd hate to think he was like that normally. You know when they find him he'll say "I was drunk and don't remember a thing", and for once it'll be the truth.

although the guy was drunk and pissed, I bet the taxi driver tried to take advantage and did go the wrong ( longer ) way... happens about 70% of times on any 20+ min ride in Tokyo these days unless you specify the exact way you go showing them you know whats up.

Driver responded really well. I hate POS customers like this.

So, those taxi driver shields are only made out of normal acrylic and not unbreakable polycarbonate sheeting? I can't believe it! They are flipping useless! Are they only there to hang advertisements from? I also can't believe it will cost ¥140,000 to replace it. The fare was less than ¥1,000, so he didn't go very far. He probably could have walked. This loon is obviously just another grown up brat that's never been punched in the face for being a Richard and has a little tantrum every time things don't go his way.

There seems to have been a spate of taxi driver attacks in recent months. It might be time to update the shields to ones that actually protect the driver, like they have in other countries. In Sydney, most taxi drivers don't even carry cash on Friday and Saturday nights. It's direct debit or walk. You swipe your card from the back seat. Their shields are a capsule made from bullet-proof polycarbonate sheeting and give no direct contact with passengers. As a result, attacks on taxi drivers are very rare in Sydney.

@disillusioned, never seen such taxis in my 15+ years in Sydney and always sat next to the driver & paid cash, fri/sat nights included. Maybe out west?

Saw the footage last night. Dunno how the driver managed to keep his cool (reminded me of the female pollute driver/secretary who got abused recently. Some very Zen blokes!)

@goldorak

He knew he was recording everything, as did the bloke with Mayuko Toyota.

Makes the whole Zen thing a lot easier....

So what happened to the phone he threw at the taxi? Taxis in China when I visited have metal bars. The drivers look like they’re in prison.

Possible Darwin award candidate. Doing that all while there's a camera filming him and then throwing your own phone at the moving taxi?! Won't be too hard to find him.

Blacktown, Mt. Druit, Cabramatta, St. Marys, Penrith, Mt. Pritchard and Liverpool taxi drivers do not carry cash.

¥140.000 for a little piece of plastic? Ridiculous.

70%? speak for yourself. In over 20 years I have never had this happen. Sure they don't always go the way you want but that's not the same.

why blur his face? Let the public see his face. Its not like its a person under the age. Let his boss, family, friends and everyone see this baby man throwing a tantrum because he didn't get what he wanted.

@just a user , not sure which planet you live on or if you know your way around tokyo, I have experienced that very often, even 80% of times and sometimes even when specifically told which way to take.

As I said I live here (can you read?), longer than you I'll bet. If you are experiencing so called 80% then I submit YOU are doing something wrong. We should give taxi drivers a break, they have a thankless job plus they have to deal with people like you that think they are being ripped off 80% of the time.

Or he just doesn't know the roads as well as he thinks he does. I'd put it at about 2-3% of taxis I catch. And I catch a lot of taxis (in lieu of buying a car).
