Tokyo host club host headbutts woman after being told he 'sucks' at karaoke

It’s an absolute requirement, obviously, that the staff of Japan’s host bars be handsome. However, industry insiders and enthusiastic customers alike routinely say what separates the top tier of hosts from their lesser colleagues isn’t their physical attractiveness.

Instead, successful hosts are the ones who can make a lady feel special. Through some mix of suave sophistication, roguish charm, and/or sensitive emotional attentiveness, they have personalities that make women enjoy spending time around them. Well, more accurately, they’re able to project a persona that women enjoy being around, but one woman found out, in a violent way, that a host she’d been cozying up to wasn’t as nice as he’d seemed.

On Oct 17, 23-year-old host Hiro Kawakami was out in Tokyo’s Kabukicho bar district with a younger coworker host and two women they’d met when they’d come to their club as customers. While the two hosts weren’t officially working at the time the group of four was out, pseudo-socializing with customers outside of the club they’re employed at (on the customers’ dime, of course) is a fairly common, and often encouraged, practice in the host/hostess industry in Japan.

The group booked a private karaoke box and began singing, but apparently one of the women didn’t care for Kawakami’s musical stylings, and began making fun of him for his off-key vocal performance, calling him “tone-deaf.” Kawakami and the woman then got into a verbal confrontation, prompting the other woman, aged 25, to step in and try to intervene. Having had his vocal cords mocked, Kawakami then decided to show off what he could do with his cranium, headbutting the second woman and otherwise striking her, fracturing her orbital floor (essentially the bone at the back of the eye socket).

Kawakami was subsequently arrested and taken into custody by police. During questioning, he admitted to the charges, saying “[The woman] was making fun of me by saying I sucked at singing, and it pissed me off.” Meanwhile, the woman’s injury is expected to take approximately one month to heal.

What a scum. If I were the judge he would be given a head butt of a prison sentence.

Should have used all the money he was getting from them for music lessons!

How about putting his head in his butt.... he belongs in a cell bar not in a host bar.

The whole host and hostess scene is a very sleazy part of Japanese culture. It should be no surprise it attracts all kinds of creeps.

Here's a song for him to practice. I hope he can whistle.

While the two hosts weren’t officially working at the time the group of four was out

This means him being a host had nothing to do with the article. Simply, a man was out with a woman. His singing was mocked and he headbutted her friend.

No, it was a dohan. A well known part of the industry, and definitely part of the job.

I thought Japanese society was always polite.

She was rude to make fun of him.

However, they both learned a valuable lesson.

People have feelings, yes even men, as shocking as that may seem to sexist sows.

Secondly, violence never resolves anything.

Well he sure ''butts'', but not ''sucks''

Hell has no fury than a karaoke-scorned host!

A month to heal ? I bet she's cured of telling her hosts they suck at their job.

Reminds me of a story my buddy living in Tokyo told me. He worked at an international school and went out with co-workers to a Karaoke box. One of the ladies, a Japanese woman, would constantly cut peoples' songs off if she didn't like their singing. That was the last time they ever went out with her.

Well I don't think we have the full story. The headline is a bit misleading too. Its not like the guy instantly head butted a critic. There was apparently a verbal argument going on between him and the critic and then her friend intervened. Who knows what she did as intervention, but it may well be she got physical first. Why else would he headbutt the other woman rather than the one he was having an argument with? I don't know. Anyway, I would sooner blame alcohol than his occupation.

I thought Japanese society was always polite.

Applying a little critical thinking would tell you it’s silly to assume any society is always anything.

I guess you could the host was a little headstrong when it comes to being insulted
