Woman arrested after remains of 4 infants found in concrete in buckets at home

Osaka prefectural police on Tuesday arrested a 53-year-old woman in Neyagawa City on suspicion of abandoning bodies after she confessed to placing four newborn babies in buckets of concrete between between 1992 and 1997.

According to police, Mayumi Saito, a part-time employee, has confessed to the crime and quoted her as saying she disposed of her newborn babies because she was worried she didn’t have enough money to raise children, Fuji TV reported. Police did not say whether Saito is suspected of killing the babies or whether they were stillborn.

According to police reports, Saito relocated to another apartment in Neyagawa in the summer of 2015, and brought the buckets with her.

On Monday at 9:30 a.m., Saito went to a koban (police box) and confessed what she had done. Police went to her apartment and found four buckets packed with concrete inside a large cardboard box placed in a closet. An image analysis confirmed that buckets contained human bones.

Police said Saito, who lives with her son, also told them she had been bothered for a long time by what she had done but did not have anyone she could talk to about it. She said the father of all four children was the same man but she never told him about the babies.

Wow......I am at a loss for words......She must have been going through hell internally

if you are worried about how you would raise another child then use birth control or keep your legs closed, you maroon.

the woman must have no conscience if she was able to do this to not one but four babies. sorry, but she deserves the death penalty.

Sadly, mothers in Japan hiding births by killing the babies and sticking the bodies in closets, suitcases, toilets, garbage bins and 'buckets of concrete' hardly raises my eyebrows anymore. All I can say is, "Another one?"

oh god please tell me they were stillborn... buckets with concrete so sad.

First I read Woman arrested for attempted murder of 11-month-old son and now this. I'm in such a messed up state now that I feel literally sick to my stomach. Right, signing off. Be back tomorrow.

Just maybe she's just after the childbirth allowance. I'm just wondering why the city hall officials didn't try to investigate the whereabouts of those children not even once! I just thought that once the child is of school age, notices from the city hall would come. Even notices for vaccinations and health check ups would randomly come. And if she's worrying that she can't handle it, have it aborted. Doing it once is bad, doing it 4x is the worst of all bad habits! Most probably she's expecting a lesser punishment by owning to it.

The odds of one woman having 4 stillborn babies have to be astronomical. That leads me to believe she killed at least one, and, more than likely, all of the babies.

Dear god lock this woman up forever NOW! And get the last remaining child away from her immediately. I know there are going to be people that would rather automatically assume she had PPD or some other excuse for doing what she did, and that might help them sleep better after one or two infants, but clearly this woman is just a monster that needs to be put away. And if it is found she did indeed murder them -- and I'm sorry, but FOUR stillborns? No -- remember what Japan's death penalty rules are. I'm against said penalty, and think she should be locked up for life and the key thrown away, with pictures of babies in her cell to remind her, but I'm curious to see how they'll enforce things given the bell-jar judgements of when mothers murder their kids (if she did).

W T F did I just read????

Tragic.

Gosh only knows what hell she must have been going through. This happens when there are a multitude of sad and tragic circumstances. Especially when there may have been pressures on or by other family.

Japan is not the only country to have these kind of tragedies.

Disappointing to read some of the anti-women comments. Reminds me slightly of the Kerry Babies case in Ireland.

I can't believe the way some people still have sympathy for someone who murderedfour newborn children

Oh wait. How do we know they weren't all stillborn, and she had no way to pay for a funeral? So she was given no other choice than to bury them in buckets of concrete?

Riiiiiiight.

If you had one unintended baby give it up for adoption and then start using birth control stupid

Her conscience killing her.

I just don't believe that having 4 consecutive stillborns was that common in Japan during the 90's.

For those who don't want or don't like children - contraceptives or abortion asap. Are condoms really that unpopular in Japan?

Why are degenerates like her able to reproduce and the ones who want kids can't?

She could have given them up for adoption and went about her life and not kill them with concrete.

Birth control and abortions. So that adults can have as much consensual sex they want.

I have to say I agree with Toasted Heretic for once. It's pretty clear that this is more than just a case of 'keep your legs shut'. The woman would have to have been deeply disturbed to do this. Of course she should be punished and be removed from the public for a long time, if not forever, but at the same time, she obviously needs help.

She must have been a complete exception and not a systematic mentally deceased person going through hell every second of living. Totally a coincidence, right??

1 ( +1 / -0 )

I agree with extanker and toastedheretic, this is an example of deep, dark mental issues that we can't possibly understand. The guilt, insanity, anxiety, stress. Her crimes are inexcusable and will haunt her to the grave.

"If you had one unintended baby give it up for adoption"

As though that's an easy decision that would benefit all around?

Suzanne Starr: "Her crimes are inexcusable and will haunt her to the grave."

And let them do so in prison.

@michael Jackson, no money for the funeral? A friend who got a miscarriage at the last trimestral had it cremated for 10,000yen. who knows if she's collecting child allowance up to the last minute!.

Very sick, but I don´t understand what good it does to turn herself in to the police at this point. What can they do other than making things worse?

Well, she killed four babies, so there's that...

0 ( +0 / -0 )

So what? The police can not return them to life. And what good does it do to anyone to jail the woman now?

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

A lot of people are taking about adoption but is that even that feasible and easy as it is in other places. My understanding is that its not.

Nothing is easy in Japan it would seem. Not saying it makes sense what she did but people outside of Japan need to understand the country first.

I really have to explain this? Because she is a murderer. By your logic, no murder victim can be 'returned to life' so there's no point in putting any killer behind bars. Come on man.
