This made the news because the women screamed and people saw this guy fleeing on the tracks. If you think this country is safe, you're clearly a man who doesn't seem to understand the number of women who are victim to gropers each and every day. Comments like yours are why so many women here don't bother to report assaults and attacks. And that is what this was.

goldorak, wish that were true, but it isn't. Doesn't matter you're foreign or not either. Some of these women are in gangs, and they have their little friends to back up their accusations, all on the pay role of course. Falsely accused Japanese men can end up spending months in prison if they won't "confess". They lose their wives, jobs, homes, the lot. Some of them commit suicide due to such allegations. The man has no chance to win unfortunately. All men here are fully aware of what can happen if accused of groping, falsely or otherwise.

If you've done nothing wrong there is no need to apologise, run, hide etc.

Are there surveillance cameras on trains? I know it would be hard to see during rush hour but there are of course groping incidences outside of rush hour too.

I agree. Nothing good can come from hanging around waiting for the cops in this case, since it's a one-sided verdict. I wouldn't run on the tracks, but I'd damn well do whatever I could to get away from anyone accusing me of this.

In Japan it's quite important sometimes to just turn and walk away (escape) if wrongfully accused, especially a local vs a foreigner. If you are wrongfully accused and can't get away, you should promptly make an accusation yourself and go to the police. If you end up being accused and not the accuser, being that you were beaten to it, you will be treated as a suspect and not an innocent one either. Being first is everything here.
