Aichi police inspector arrested for leaking confidential data to yakuza

A police inspector in Aichi Prefecture has been arrested on suspicion of leaking sensitive information to an acquaintance who had ties to an organized crime syndicate.

According to Aichi Prefectural Police, the man accused of leaking the information is 55-year-old Katsunori Kuraki, a police inspector for one of its investigative divisions. TBS reported that Kuraki was arrested last week on suspicion of sharing confidential information with a man who has deep ties to the Kodo-kai group, which is affiliated with the Yamaguchi-gumi. The man, identified as Yoshinori Sato, is believed to operate a chain of sex establishments in Nagoya, TBS quoted police as saying.

Kuraki reportedly used a police database to identify the owner of a vehicle and provided personal information at the man's request in August of last year, contravening laws pertaining to civil servants' handling of confidential data.

TBS quoted police as saying that Kuraki will be charged with accepting "entertainment" as a bribe in exchange for information.

a chain of sex establishments

Funny they arrest the cop but running a sex business in Japan is totally illegal.

"Entertainment," eh?

That's a new euphemism for me.

Stupid, he was only a few years away from the huge retirement pay that cops/civil servants get when they retire here.

It's interesting that this article drew very few comments and the few comments it do draw follow a very similar theme. It just seems that nobody is surprised or disgusted by the corruption in the Japanese police force anymore. It's just the butt of some very distasteful and sarcastic jokes. Well done cops! This loser will suffer the agony of a 10% pay cut for three months and be back in his job within the week. "I am the law!"

Nice Judge Dredd reference. Can't help but voice it in Sly's accent. "I am the law". It is quite funny though that so many J-cops break the law. I only find it funny because Japan pretends to be such a safe, law abiding country. But if their own police are constantly breaking the law... that's just a joke. Deal with it logically J-gov. Super harsh penalties for police who break the law. Stop protecting your own and setting the wrong example.

"accepting entertainment"

C'mon, really?? He's gonna give out personal information on a citizen for what will certainly be intimidation or a hit, not to mention risk his reputation and retirement, all for a short, messy screw in some sleazy dive?

Wow, lets see what happens now. Community service? I feel bad for the guy who he gave information about. Who knows if that guy is alive or not. Cops these days.
