Akihabara observes 13th anniversary of deadly stabbing rampage

Tokyo's Akihabara district on Tuesday marked the 13th anniversary of a stabbing rampage that killed seven and injured 10 others.

Passersby placed flowers and offered prayers near the intersection where Tomohiro Kato, a 37-year-old former temp worker now on death row, mowed down pedestrians in a vehicle-free zone with a truck and randomly stabbed passers-by with a knife at around 12:30 p.m. on June 8, 2008.

Kato's death sentence was finalized in February 2015. The Supreme Court said in its ruling that he was motivated by rage after being harassed on an internet forum he had become engrossed in.

Kato said he had scouted the location before the rampage and confirmed that it would be packed with people. Akihabara, once known mainly as an electronics mecca, is now better known for attracting fans of manga and anime.

I was in Akihabara that morning. Ironically, as an American, I don’t support the death penalty. Death is too quick and easy. Let him rot and suffer. The lost pensions of all the people he killed will more than cover the cost of a lifetime of incarceration.

Condolences to the grieving families & friends. Hope for recovery for the survivors. “Rest in Peace” to those lost. ‘Justice’ for the assailant.

This case is so prominent and infamous its crazy to think the time it happened i was in Tokyo (nowhere near Akihabara)

With my poor Japanese ability and not a lot of interest in anything other than sport at the time i completely missed all of the news coverage at the time.

There are way, way too many anniversaries like these being covered only this week, let alone in recent times.

People that can't accept the reality when it doesn't suit their wishes are very dangerous, most of the time they are contempt with harassing other people online, where they are relatively free of risks, but sometimes their sociopathy causes them to become deranged and violent in the real life.
