Officials in Suginami noted that the ward has a "special" connection with Anne Frank, whose father in 1976 presented a local school with three roses bred from those admired by the young girl in hiding.

The plants have grown here and are still blooming every year, the officials said.

"The link between the story of Anne Frank and Japan will not be broken by this kind of act," Lewi said.

Thank you Israel, beautiful gesture and beautiful words. Israel-Japan friendship never to be broken .

Keep all Anne Frank books behind the counter and by request so the the library will know the details of the person who checks it out.

What makes him believe that a person from Japan did this?

I'm guessing the book is in Japanese, no? So there's a good chance a person from Japan did it.

Indeed: only Japanese people are clever enough to read Japanese.

Regardless of which nation or race was involved, let's keep in mind that it's a crime against all of us.

We should unite, not point fingers.

“Japan is so known in Israel ... as a pacifist and as a very secure country. So this kind of act really made a big impression on us,” he told reporters.

“But I think that everybody understood that it’s a single act that does not represent Japanese people,” he said.

It's too bad the anti Japan crowd the world over don't share this same simple belief.

@oldman it is also unfortunate that Japanese and Japanophiles take every tiny bit of criticism as Japan bashing. I know some say harsh things, but I often see people take little things way too personal.

I am glad Israel was able to make sure the Japanese know that most reasonable people do judge a whole society on the actions of a few. Let's all remember that.

The empirial Japanese government didnt protect the Jews during WW2 so why would the nostalgic nationalist government feel so obliged to protect Anne Frank books now?

There are some sick people wandering around. This kind of subversive action is a very Japanese form of expression, even if it is one sick and sorry individual.

So you think you know Japan better than people that live there ?And you think Israel didnt checked every angle of this event? They are not that kind of people, everything that they do they do after lot of thinking, and Israel dont like to make flaws, specially in this case . So, your clueless comments keep for your self .

A simple bit of research would have shown you this, from the Jewish Virtual Library:

"Chiune and Yukiko Sugihara who, at the beginning of World War II, by an ultimate act of altruism and self-sacrifice, risked their careers, their livelihood and their future to save the lives of more than 6,000 Jews. This selfless act resulted in the second largest number of Jews rescued from the Nazis."

The second largest number of Jews rescued from the Nazis by the Japanese Consul-General and his wife. Now then, you were saying?
