An estimated 250 apples ready to be picked have been stolen from an orchard in Itayanagi town, Aomori Prefecture. Police said the apples were stolen sometime before 3 p.m. on Thursday, local media reported Friday.
The 60-year-old orchard owner said the stolen apples were of the brand, “Gunma Meigetsu.” He said all the apples were still on their trees when he last checked the orchard at around 3 p.m. on Wednesday.
Police said there have been similar theft cases in Aomori Prefecture, with at least 500 apples stolen from an orchard in Aomori City on Wednesday and about 600 bunches of grapes stolen from a vineyard in Tsuruta town on Monday.

And if you think this is the No.1 crime story in Japan it says a heck of a lot about where you get your news for this country!
Do the hustle
Theft of fruits and vegetables is a common crime in Japan. The resale product is very high. Obviously the retailers are willing to accept produce with dubious origins as long as they are cheap.

When Apple Theft is the Number 1 crime story in Japan, you realize how safe country it is! lol lol!
when Apple thefy is a crime in Japan you know J agriculture is ripping off the consumer, I would say killing a building of people in a fire or stabbing a hospital full of disabled people would be the #1 crime.

Criminals should consider how they stole the livelihood of these hard-working apple farmers and feel ashamed of themselves.
"Easy pickings" but your conscience should be bothering you.

That's anywhere between ¥120,000 to ¥150,000 or so in apples that were stolen! Since it's considered a "brand" apple they sell for about ¥3,000 yen for 6.
Unfortunately theft of produce and other agricultural and fishery products happens quite often at this time of year.

Easy pickens....

Stolen apples for apple stollen?

Someone needs to get to the core of this problem. I think the issue stems from the lack of security on the orchard. And a lot of people seem to be wining about stolen grapes as well. It's time we put an end to this succulent mystery.

Why is it that people think it's funny when some struggling old farmer is robbed? If I walked into a small shop and lifted a 300,000 yen in merchandise, would that be funny too? But if it's apples, it's just a joke?

Trail or hidden cameras are effective and cheap. Cheaper still a sign stating security cameras on guard.
Sceptical
If these apples were turned into juices and sold in bottles...no way to track the origin. 1 liter /bottle for ¥1000 is a bargain.

How long did it take them ? They must be professional pickers... that must surely narrow down the investigation - plus how'd you transfer that many apples without going unnoticed ?

Gunma Geigetsu Apple
Originated from Gunma prefecture, Meigetsu is a hybrid between Akaji and Fuji variety, which gives it yellowish-red skin. When at its peak maturity, it is bright yellow in color with red blush and with honey-like sweetness, crisp texture and juicy flesh.

I saw online advertising for Gunma Meigetsu Apple on the Momobud Premium Fruits online shop from Singapore. It's interesting to know about the Gunma Meigetsu Apple. I want to taste Gunma Meigetsu Apple and the apple must be delicious. We moved to Australia 23 years ago and only a few times back to Japan since we moved to Melbourne. This Gunma Meigetsu Apple was not marketing yet.
We have a very tasty Royal Gala Apple and Australian Fuji Apple. They are very delicious, but not expensive as fruit in Japan.

I had fresh apple juice yesterday.
350 yen for a smallish cup...

Fuji Apples, Australia? Seriously? There's a variety of Fuji Apple from Nagano, but it's not the best, the best from Nagano is Shimano Sweet, and as the name implies it's sweet. Not sure about an apple named after a loud bird ;-) either (Australian :-) ), but I guess it's a 'royal' loud bird haha.
In Nagano, some apple vendors leave bags full of apples outside their door with a donation box. So these Aomori apples must be very special to be stolen in the middle of the night...

Gone to a not-so-far-away local supermarket I'd guess.

I went on Sunday to an fruit and vegetables yard.
Thousands of very good but not pretty to look apple could be eaten (on ground mainly).
Apple is worth just the cost of picking them...
Stolen yard's lord is so dumb he can't buy a 3000 yen web cam with movement detection.

Lazy criminals always go for the low hanging fruit.

Whoever did it, I’d recommend soaking them in vinegar and water for 20 minutes if they wanna eat the skins.
