A man was arrested in violation of the Sword and Firearms Control law and for attempted robbery after he threatened an employee with a 16-cm chopping knife and demanded money at the reception of a traffic safety association on the first floor of a police station in Kesennuma City in Miyagi Prefecture on Monday afternoon.

The man reportedly threatened to kill the female employee working at the desk if she didn't give him money, but officers soon noticed the incident and restrained the offender. The woman was unharmed.

According to police, 22-year-old Kazuhiro Hatakeyama said that he attempted the robbery because he needed the money. Hatakeyama had arrived at the police station in his own vehicle, and was reportedly also carrying cooking oil and a lighter.

"If he needed money, why didn't he just sell his car?"

He needed it to get to the store to buy cooking oil. He probably sold his pan to buy the knife so he could rob the guy for money to buy food.

It is starting to sound like some USSR-era Russian joke.

To all people that want to go to get rid of their money problem, get a roof over their head and traditional Japanese food, all for free: try to rob the police station. That saves a lot of hassle and time for you.

Alternative, if you are foreign: board a Japanese whaling ship carrying a knife and claim you want to arrest the captain.
