Local media is reporting that it was a tourist from China on a runaway shopping spree. They apprehended him buying a JPY 900,000 yen Nikon camera at Bic Camera in Ginza. When asked why, he said that he wanted to buy something "Made in Japan".

It still only appears to have been a bike until, apparently, being verified.

On a bicycle? I imagine carrying 1,000,000 yen in notes must be fairly bulky but would presumably fit nicely into the basket of a mama-chari.

Wait. A mama-chari aided this crime. I think we should ban them as soon as humanly possible with little to no consideration.

And to think that this crime could have been prevented if the J-Cops had checked his bicycle registration.

900,000 yen camera. Must be a really nice one. Some salesperson made a nice commission.

LOL @ S7ro9kGm3aQ. I've carried half -500,000 yen- in my pocket once (had to pay in cash). It's not that difficult to fit twice that into your pockets. Or have you never seen that much money at one time?

So, really, some finds is strange that a bicycle would be used in Tokyo as a getaway vehicle?

Seems to me a bike would be the i ideal vehicle.

Did you expect the guy to hop into a vintage Ford or Dodge, with driver, waiting just outside?

Do you guys realize that movies don't actually resemble real life all that much?

And a million yen couldn't be any bulkier than your average paperback novel.

Sounds more to me like a convenient bust. A Chinese tourist with a gun...Right. Imagine;Poor guy used his hard earned, did indeed want to buy something made in Japan, arrested for buying a beaut camera, but the translator is no good...

Bicultural - yes, but not only in other Asian currencies, where it's considerably bulkier.

hate people who speaks ill of japaneses, specially those dumb enough to say "hai" when asked where they came from.

And here I thought a bicycle is the worst possible getaway vehicle in Tokyo, considering that stopping bicycles is the main activity at the local koban...

I think we can safely say it WAS a gun instead of appearing to be one.

How did they get that age estimate? Just looking at hands?

There are on average of 3 Post Office robberies everyday in Japan. A pretty good percentage of them are caught by the cops, "hero citizens" and Post/bank staff. Ever see those orange balls behind the counter?? They are trained to throw those at robbers when they exit the building and their get-a-way bike, car..etc and get marked with dye to make identification easier. Its amazing to know quite a few robbers have been caught because of the dye splashed on their clothes and/or car/bike as they made a get-away. Post Office workers and Bank workers are taught passive resistence (moving slowly to get money, make excuse we need time to open the money box...etc.). This guy makes the news because he had a gun, which probably scared the crap out of everybody. He got the money fast and got away fast without the hassle.

There was one case a couple of years ago where a guy walked into a bank with a fire-extinguisher and walked out with over 20 million yen in cash.

Now I see why there is a basket fitted at the front of the bicycles; it is large enough to carry all the robbed money.

Adding it was a e-bike, the electro motor supports a constant escape speed of 25 km/h.
