Police in Osaka have obtained an arrest warrant for a 23-year-old woman believed to be the mother of a newborn baby boy whose corpse was found in a trash can in a hotel.
A hotel cleaning employee found the infant in the trash can near an elevator on the seventh floor of the hotel in Chuo Ward at around 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Kyodo News reported. The baby, with its umbilical cord still attached and wrapped in a towel, was inside a plastic bag.
The baby was taken to hospital where he was confirmed dead. An autopsy revealed that it was likely stillborn.
Police said the woman, who has been in hospital since Thursday, has admitted to placing her baby in the trash can. Police said they will arrest her after she has recovered.
The woman stayed at the hotel from the night of Feb 18 until the morning of Feb 22. An employee, who had become suspicious of the woman's behavior, visited her room at around noon on the 21st and found what looked like bloodstains on her bed and floor, but the hotel did not contact the authorities.

Well... social welfare here tends to turn a blind-eye on the ills of society and do little to nothing to prevent them, often even saying, "We had no idea!" or "Sure we visited umpteen dozen times and saw signs of abuse, but we thought the kids should still be with the parents. Oh, dead, you say? Couldn't have seen it coming!"
She DOES need some kind of support, and she won't get charged with anything besides wrongful abandonment of a corpse, but she's probably not going to get the proper help from social welfare at all.

And... why not? Scared of the bad rep? But hey, I guess finding a corpse later instead and admitting you didn't call the authorities is way better.

Reality is vastly different from the idealised world we might conjure while sitting in the comfort of our rooms.
Arresting this woman is the opposite of what should be done.

I don’t feel sorry for the woman and don’t need to know her circumstances leading up to this. Whatever her situation was leading up to this she should have found a hospital room instead of a hotel room. Even if she had no money, a hospital in Japan is not going to turn a woman in labor away.

I honestly feel more sorry for the woman. Probably, she has a very bad story to tell regarding this episode in her life.
