cheap move for their failure

33 ( +51 / -18 )

I hope she got out of Japan. No doubt the prosecutors want to hold her hostage in exchange for Ghosn return.

Fix your “justice” system, Japan.

21 ( +43 / -22 )

In a statement, prosecutors said they had obtained the warrant on suspicion she made false statements during April testimony to the Tokyo district court about meetings with an unnamed individual.

And they're only taking action now? I smell a rat.

17 ( +31 / -14 )

I literally said this was going to happen. Now watch them put out an Interpol red notice for her. My guess, she'll be picked up and used as a bargaining chip to get Ghosn back to Japan. Just gotta watch the timing of it, she'll probably be on her way to a country that has an extradition agreement with Japan when it happens.

Mark my words, Ghosn isn't winning this one. He gave Japan a new deck of cards and they aren't afraid of using it.

-3 ( +18 / -21 )

She's sipping wine in Lebanon. What is that warrant going to do?

22 ( +35 / -13 )

And.......

-4 ( +6 / -10 )

Kafka lives

In a statement, prosecutors said they had obtained the warrant on suspicion she made false statements during April testimony to the Tokyo district court about meetings with an unnamed individual.

-7 ( +10 / -17 )

Pretty sure this action is motivated by vindictive feelings by the MOJ. Like a child breaking there own toy to prove a point no one cares about. I'm also sure her travel plans won't be including countries with extradition treaties with Japan....and that is a whole lot of places. It s amusing to see the foot stamping from the MOJ.

15 ( +31 / -16 )

Kafka lives

Exactly. There was almost certainly no plan to arrest her a week ago. This is purely a political move by the justice system and a vindictive one given that they have no hope of extraditing her. Justice is meant to be above politics, but a way of finding the truth. But not in Japan.

18 ( +33 / -15 )

Let's go get his wife for exchange. Lolz. Cheap cheap cheap move MOJ

11 ( +24 / -13 )

No wonder he couldn't meet her

6 ( +8 / -2 )

Such a cheap move. It reeks of desperation.

18 ( +32 / -14 )

So prosecutors are coming down heavy on little lies now.

Good.

Good precedent to be set by them.

Soon we'll see Abe & Inc in court and half of Japan Inc.

8 ( +21 / -13 )

“Suspicion of false statements”? No evidence? Aren’t these the same prosecutors that claimed to the court that Ms. Ghosn’s criticism of Japan’s criminal justice system “constituted a form of witness tampering.” Geez! Stop the harassment!

12 ( +26 / -14 )

Issue all your little pieces of paper you want. They are meaningless outside the archipelago.

12 ( +27 / -15 )

Where is the evidence please ?

MOJ, say something meaninful please:

what is the false statetement ?

Who is the person ? And by the way, she was not ordered not to speak to others as far as I remember

And of course, doing right now to think that it will deflect the defiling of the reputation of Gosh couple instead of the MOJ...how pathetic !

-3 ( +11 / -14 )

No doubt this is retaliatory. On the other hand, on general principles, the odds favor them having a case if they choose to pursue it. If Ghosn's wife showed up to trial, she probably was briefed by the defense counsel on exactly what to say, which also is to say, she did not tell the whole truth. For example, she probably "forgot" anything that was inconvenient.

Of course, everyone plays this game and contradictory testimony is a regular in courts, so perjury is a substantive crime but reserved for the most blatant abuses. Experienced lawyers know how much de facto slack they have within a system and coach their witnesses accordingly to get the best possible testimony without exposing them to perjury charges.

Usually this works out, but considering what Ghosn's wife was almost certainly involved in, I'm not exactly shocked the screws came on this time.

19 ( +22 / -3 )

Is reactionary the only option?

-14 ( +0 / -14 )

What???.if U cannot get the husband , get his wife game ???.

3 ( +17 / -14 )

Wo didn't see this coming? Now, they'll try to get her back to Japan and use her as a hostage to get him back. How pathetic are these losers? She was interviewed over this so-called 'secret meeting' nearly a year ago and they issue an arrest warrant just to get another hostage for their messed up justice system. Pathetic!

6 ( +21 / -15 )

@Kazuaki

If Ghosn's wife showed up to trial..

She would be held hostage until Ghosn turned himself in. There is a thin veneer of civilization on the island of the rising sun. Gets worn through rather quickly when rubbed the wrong way.

6 ( +21 / -15 )

Japan, how LOW can you go!!!

9 ( +24 / -15 )

Prosecutor acting like a jilted ex-boyfriend seeking revenge. Real mature there, prosecutor.

6 ( +21 / -15 )

No doubt this is retaliatory. On the other hand, on general principles, the odds favor them having a case if they choose to pursue it.

That will be huge sacrifice from Ghosn that can take years, while court and prosecutors make preparation Ghosn had to continue his limited freedom in bail. Beside that from day to day his former company can made up unpleasant surprise to him that can add more charge.

Even if he successfully manage to win his first court, prosecutor will bring him to higher court and that will take years.

7 ( +9 / -2 )

My god this really makes the prosecutors and Japan look so pathetic! She is in Lebanon and never coming back to japan. Japan is so friendless, has only extradition treaties with S Korea and the US in the World. Arrest warrant is just a joke.

7 ( +21 / -14 )

japan lost, Ghosn won, he and his wife will never set foot in japan again.

8 ( +24 / -16 )

Arrest warrant issued in Japan for Ghosn's wife

People to still having difficulty in understanding hostage justice system? This is another one, get one hostage to get to primary hostage.

This is one of the reason why he had enough with justice system in Japan, they already try to target his family.

8 ( +22 / -14 )

"Unnamed individual"?!? Why unnamed? Gotta love the transparency.

It took them 8 months to realize there was a (supposed) problem with the statements? Japan's prosecutors aren't the sharpest tools in the shed, are they.

8 ( +22 / -14 )

haha idiots... that like the lowest.. who runs prosecutor office.. better tell your boys to stop the global embarrassment

9 ( +23 / -14 )

JeffLeeToday 07:49 pm JST

It took them 8 months to realize there was a (supposed) problem with the statements? Japan's prosecutors aren't the sharpest tools in the shed, are they.

Look, it isn't that hard. To even know there was an individual, they must have a witness or other evidence. Now, suppose Ms. Ghosn says "No we never met" or "I don't remember meeting him."

There is a contradiction and thus a reasonable suspicion Ms. Ghosn is lying (especially since Ms. Ghosn is the wife of Mr. Ghosn and the witness would be in a more neutral position).

The only question is, whether to do something about it, or content yourself with making the defendant witness' testimony look as un-creditable as possible.

12 ( +17 / -5 )

Did she do her testimony under oath?

I cannot recall that and believe it was a voluntary answering to questions.

Or did I miss something?

Thanks for commenting.

9 ( +13 / -4 )

(Presses palms together and looks upward). "Please, please, let Ghosn name some names and open the closet wide open. We are sick of the secrets and corruption!"

3 ( +18 / -15 )

Ex-Green Beret Michael Taylor is next.

13 ( +18 / -5 )

Ghosn and wife are doing Whale research on Lebanon, as soon as they finish counting the fishes in the sea , they will back!!

-6 ( +11 / -17 )

Err, somebody tell Japan nobody cares about them.

4 ( +19 / -15 )

Nissan is already accusing Ghosn about the gorgeous house to still keep living. It seems Ghosn and his wife would have to be evicted from it soon because it legally belongs to Nissan subsidiary. He bought it with Nissan's money years ago. He is now out of Nissan. It will try to give much pressure to both little by little.

5 ( +15 / -10 )

Of course she married Ghosn for his money.

-8 ( +14 / -22 )

From the beginning Japan has been ridiculed, now they become quite pathetic with this arrest warrant.

What's next ?

9 ( +24 / -15 )

I actually didn’t think they would go after the wife. What ever happened to a Ishido?

Next is his mother.

4 ( +19 / -15 )

Prosecutors here think they're saving face by issuing this farcical arrest warrant! They're not. They're simply adding to their image of being underhanded, unfair and biased!

15 ( +28 / -13 )

In a statement, prosecutors said they had obtained the warrant on suspicion she made false statements during April testimony to the Tokyo district court about meetings with an unnamed individual.

I have seen Japanese make false statements then recant the whole thing, and no charges made at all. I thought it was not illegal to make false statements to police here.

9 ( +16 / -7 )

These petty, mean, incompetent and now vengeful prosecutors are a real disgrace for Japan's worldwide reputation of fairness, efficiency and dignity.

9 ( +21 / -12 )

The Ministry of Justice (really?) is causing embarrassment to the Japanese nation-please refrain...!

9 ( +21 / -12 )

Very childish behaviour that just makes Japan look worse. Leave the wife alone. All it shows is bitterness and anger because they were outsmarted by a gaijin.

(偽証)

(Perjury)

第百六十九条 法律により宣誓した証人が虚偽の陳述をしたときは、三月以上十年以下の懲役に処する。

Article 169 When a witness who has sworn in accordance with law gives false testimony, imprisonment with work for not less than 3 months but not more than 10 years shall be imposed.

The key word is bolded - a suspect, accused or defendant is not a witness. Further, procedurally they are not requested to swear.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

I do not mind getting downvoted for asking a question. But please try to enlighten me too.

Thanks!

3 ( +5 / -2 )

@Kazuaki

It seems you are confirming she did not swear, right?

Thus no parjure, right?

0 ( +4 / -4 )

Stand by your man, who would ask for less.

12 ( +15 / -3 )

Ghosn 1 japan 0

16 ( +19 / -3 )

So, they've obtained an arrest warrant in Japan.

I suppose they will be looking to have INTERPOL issue a Red Notice next.

However, France has said it would not extradite its citizens to another country. And Lebanon has no extradition treaty with Japan.

And, unlike Carlos himself, I just don't see too many foreign courts / governments / jurisdictions being all too sympathetic to Japan wanting to go after Carole. Doesn't matter if Japan might have evidence. It just all looks too vindictive and calculated. And it makes Carole look like a pawn Japan is using to get to Carlos.

But, of course, I fully expect Japanese prosecutors to pull all of their tricks out of the bag. One thing I know. Prosecutors, no matter the country, HATE losing and HATE being embarrassed. And with the full resources and power of the State behind them, they can be pretty vindictive.

By the way, two can play this game. Maybe France should issue an arrest warrant and get an INTERPOL Red Notice for Tsunekazu Takeda. The guy is dirtier than dirty.

15 ( +17 / -2 )

Ghosn should sue the japanese prosecutors for wrongful arrest for what they have put him through with their disgusting and disgraceful actions.

12 ( +15 / -3 )

This sounds like what Saudi Arabia and north korea would do. "If you ever wanna see your wife again, you better return."

9 ( +12 / -3 )

What's next? Arrest his kids and grandkids? "I don't care if you're 11, you're under arrest until your grandpa returns."

9 ( +12 / -3 )

Wow, are they ever embarrassed, and meanwhile this is getting more and more press, and bringing more and more attention to Japan's lack of human rights when it comes to incarceration, interrogation, and trials.

8 ( +12 / -4 )

Ghosn should sue the japanese prosecutors for wrongful arrest

Surely, he can seek damage in civil court. But that is possible only after he wins 'not guilty' verdict in the criminal court. He actually had a good chance of winning as his lawyers said, but he threw it away. He lost his case, and he will never be able to clear his name.

zones2surfToday  10:09 pm JST

However, France has said it would not extradite its citizens to another country.

Yeah, but French prosecutors have their ax to grind. I would not be surprised if they arrest Ghosn on fraud charges against Renault.

-6 ( +2 / -8 )

@JuminRhee,

What's next? Arrest his kids and grandkids? "I don't care if you're 11, you're under arrest until your grandpa returns."

Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if they decide to go after his son, Anthony.

@CH3CHO,

Yeah, but French prosecutors have their ax to grind. I would not be surprised if they arrest Ghosn on fraud charges against Renault.

Oh, absolutely. And I think Carlos knows that. And is prepared for that, in some way. I think that he resigned himself to that in setting all of this up. What I do know is that France will never use Carole as leverage against him.

9 ( +9 / -0 )

So pathetic, what next ? They already took illegaly her passport thinking to pressure Carlos and what she did was simply to run away with her other passport. Did she get arrested few days later by coming back ? Not at all as persecutor...oops prosecutor has nothing against her.

Prepare the popcorn for tomorrow press conference and how this will impact in next months/years Japan feodal "justice" and worldwide image.

10 ( +12 / -2 )

How about making a voodoo doll of Ghosn and poking it every day until he returns? That outta be more persuasive lol

7 ( +9 / -2 )

After arrest warrant for Carole, Japan would request Interpol to issue red notice for her anyway but no extradition.

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

@Kazuaki

It seems you are confirming she did not swear, right?

Thus no parjure, right?

She's a witness, not a suspect, accused or defendant. You didn't hear about her getting the 23 days, did you?

-7 ( +0 / -7 )

She's already in Lebanon where Japan has no reach. Step by step Japan prosecution makes a mockery of any judicial fairness. What a farce!

8 ( +10 / -2 )

Japanese govt may ask Israel secretly to get Ghosn whenever he is out of Lebanon. He may go overseas someday.

-5 ( +2 / -7 )

Arrest warrant issued in Japan for Ghosn's wife

Bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

You can't make this stuff up. Omg, as if they are actually going to arrest her! She and Carlos are in Lebanon, they can't be arrested by the Japanese... unless... the Japanese hire some thugs to kidnap them and bring them to Japan! At this point I wouldn't rule out the attempt. The Japanese have lost face big time with the Ghosns' escape from this injustice. Can't wait for Ghosn's upcoming press conference.

9 ( +10 / -1 )

Cheap move. Suspicion of false statements should put Japan Inc and the diet all under arrest. This is not a justice system clearly just a vindictive corporate apparatus

6 ( +8 / -2 )

Yes. Keep showing how petty and pathetic your "justice" system is Japan.

9 ( +10 / -1 )

This whole episode has exposed Japan's medieval justice system to the world.

It's good that CEO's around the world can now understand how dirty the Japanese play.

Japan can forget about "attracting international executive talent" for it's companies.

The Ghosn's have made fools of Japan... or more accurately... the Japanese have made fools of themselves.

Whatever... it's a huge humiliation for Japan.

8 ( +10 / -2 )

This is just ridiculous. Do the Japanese prosecutors want to look stupid?

6 ( +8 / -2 )

Useless. Law is a joke, freedom is king.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

A couple on the run, like Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow...

-5 ( +0 / -5 )

This marks a new low for the government of Japan.

9 ( +10 / -1 )

Excellent! She knows where money in Lebanon has gone.....funding terrorism?

-13 ( +0 / -13 )

A desperate measure. Fat chance you'll get either one of them now.

9 ( +10 / -1 )

I wonder if they will send out an arrest warrant for his kids too!?

7 ( +9 / -2 )

Serrano:

they can't be arrested by the Japanese... unless... the Japanese hire some thugs to kidnap them and bring them to Japan!

Sounds like what the north Koreans would do...

7 ( +8 / -1 )

That is a cheap move. Very suspicious that they've been hanging on to this since April and the allegations are vague to say the least.

8 ( +9 / -1 )

Seems like a move the Chinese govt would make towards ... Canada ... over something they didn't like.

Stay classy Japan.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

The last time Carlos Ghosn wanted to organize s press conference after winning bail in Japan, he was re-arrested and thrown back to jail. Now a day before his scheduled press conference in Beirut, they have issued an arrest warrant for his wife. Shameless bullies Japanese prosecutors. Japan has extradition treaties with only 2 countries, the US and South Korea. The Ghosns must make sure they don't travel to these countries. They should remain in Lebanon and enjoy their life.

11 ( +11 / -0 )

stupid move, shameless and hopeless to the lowest point. now i see the escape from ghosn is a must.

8 ( +8 / -0 )

@ Shimasaki,

That law applies to people giving testimony I suppose, but what about cases where a Japanese person makes false claims to the police, for revenge, mental illness, moods, racism etc? no law to cover that?

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Shameless bullies Japanese prosecutors. Japan has extradition treaties with only 2 countries, the US and South Korea

But how does that work? there are Japanese who are wanted by the DOJ and have run back to Japan, and Japan will not extradite them to the US. I thought such a treaty was reciprocal.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Prosecutors in Japan on Tuesday obtained an arrest warrant for Carole Ghosn, wife of former Nissan chief Carlos Ghosn, who last month jumped bail and fled the country.

Yeah, this is all smelling like panic and desperation on the prosecution side. They knew how to get to Carlos by denying him communication with his wife. Cant do that now; he is out of country.

This is going to get really interesting, nothing like losing credibility and transparent incompetence to the rest of the world. No amount of talk show panel discussions will make this wrong right.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

But how does that work? there are Japanese who are wanted by the DOJ and have run back to Japan, and Japan will not extradite them to the US. I thought such a treaty was reciprocal.

Japan only follows rules when it suits. Carlos is making Japan Inc look a laughing stock, they should give up before it gets any worse.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The behavior of the country's government and judiciary makes one kind of thankful that Japan is an island surrounded by water…
