Arson suspect says he got thrill from seeing firefighters, police rush to scene

A 26-year-old unemployed man, who has been arrested on suspicion of setting fire to garbage bags in Tokyo's Akihabara district, said he did so because he got a thrill out of seeing firefighters and police rush to the scene.

According to police, Yuki Oguchi set fire to large garbage bags outside commercial facilities on five occasions between May 29 and May 31, TV Asahi reported Wednesday. He was arrested on Tuesday after security camera footage showed him setting fire to a garbage bag with a lighter.

Police quoted Oguchi, who is homeless, as saying he just wanted to vent his frustration and stress and that he got a buzz when fire engines arrived. He also said it was the first time anyone had made a fuss over him.

Luckily he didn't go further than garbage bins and not to buildings. He needs help and a way out of being homeless.

He also said it was the first time anyone had made a fuss over him.

I think that sentence explains it all...

Pyromania though is more than just a crime. It is also a impulse control disorder along with kleptomania, compulsive gambling and others. As such, he needs to seek help and get professional assistance. Unfortunately there are misconceptions about mental illnesses. We should never judge a human or make them feel inferior for having a mental disorder and treat them with respect and dignity. Be grateful that you don't suffer from any mental illness.
