Exactly Strangerland! I know of many people in their 40's and 50's whose life is on-hold while they are house ridden full time carers for their elderly parents. There are quite a few private organisations for elderly care that are extremely expensive and not subsidised by the government. The government sponsored aged care units are few and far between and are under staffed and over stocked with the elderly. This is the real crisis of the ageing population. There are not enough facilities or staff to take care of them.

This is so sad - a reflection on how people are left to cope alone, and they simply cannot cope, and shouldn't have to.

This is a very unfortunate case of someone having to go it alone. He may have asked for help and may have received some. Maybe it wasn't enough. We don't really know.

Yes, but you don't just give up and knock off your parents because you're tired of taking care of them. Go to the government sponsored agencies and harrass them until they decide to help. Even if they can't help directly, they might be able to assist with getting funding assistance to put the aginge relative into some kind of day care facility, so that at least there is some rest and recovery time. My neighbors do this, and it seems to work well.

From where can they get help? their relatives and the government? fat chance in Japan!

I've just recently came back from Japan. This has been the fourth suicide I've read about this week while I was staying there. Heartbreaking. :(
