Body found in Mie identified as that of missing schoolgirl

Police in Asahi, Mie Prefecture, said Friday that a body found Thursday has been identified as that of 15-year-old junior high school girl missing since Aug 25.

According to police, the naked body of Hiromi Terawa was found by an officer on a plot of vacant land in Asahi at around 2:30 p.m. on Thursday. Police said the cause of death was asphyxiation. Her clothes, bag and cell phone were found nearby but her money had been taken, police said.

Fuji TV quoted police as saying that Terawa was last seen talking with a friend at a nearby supermarket in Yokkaichi at around 10:30 p.m. on Aug 25. An email was then sent from her cell phone to an email address belonging to her sister, which read, "I'm heading home." At around 11 p.m., the sister tried to call her cell phone, but there was no answer. A missing person's report was filed on Aug 27.

Local residents say very few people walk in the area where the body was found.

Mirai Hayashi,

I know dumb phones don't have gps

"Dumb phones" do indeed have GPS capability, and most manufactured within the last 5 years have incorporated GPS tracking technologies to assist mapping software, as well as help friends locate one another via a request sent across the network.

Perhaps this will be helpful in the police investigation. If this girl had her GPS security permissions set the right way, the police could develop a very detailed picture of where she was, a least on an hourly basis or so, in the days leading up to her death.

I can look at my GPS history and plot exactly where I was over the past 3 days using the saved positional data. But the police have to move quickly with her phone. Older data tends to be overwritten automatically as time passes, and 6 days have already gone by since her disappearance.

My condolences. Hurting any girl brings about terrible karma to the person who did this.

She was one of my former students. I taught her in elementary school. I can't believe this happened!!

Be careful of where you go and what you do with quick acquaintances.

Yeah, this a huge tragedy for the parents. But, in a country where child porn is not illegal and you have the likes of AKB48 and other child soft-porn stars being idolized it should not come as any surprise that this kind of thing happens. RIP little lady. Condolences to the parents.

I hope the person who found the body has a good alibi. They must be now number one suspect.

Isn't there a way to find her location from her cell phone? I know dumb phones don't have gps, but I thought they could triangulate her location by finding out what tower her cell is talking to.

Where were the parents? Couldn't they pick her up or anybody else pick her up? They allowed her to walk home alone?

DNA check her?

Where were the parents? According to news reports, the mother and sister were waiting for her at the station. She decided to get off at her friend's station because she wanted to talk to her more. She decided to walk home from there...

Thank God this country has the death penalty!

sorry but what is a "15 year old" doing out at night alone at 11pm. Parents should not be letting their kids out late at night (don't matter if they are with friends). This is irresponsability by parents. This tragedy would have been avoided if the parents would have picked up their daughter after the event. I have seen way too many drunk losers on the streets (specially after big hanabi festivals). RIP to the girl did not deserve to end her live like this. Hope the catch the guy and he gets put in jail for life.
