I really wish, even with post-partum depression, the mothers wouldn't kill their babies with them.

Even being raised by a father, there's a good chance that they'll grow up happy.

Also many fathers experience happiness in raising their kids.

At least give the babies the chance to experience the sensations of life.

Another two victims of the lack of awareness and care for mothers suffering from depression in Japan. Soon enough posters here will be condemning this woman for what she did. If you have ever been close to someone suffering post-partum depression you will know that these women are not themselves. it is due to combination hormonal imbalances, loneliness, societal expectation and often ridicule from people around them, such as family, who should be supporting them. Very sad.

It's not out the question that this poor woman DID seek help, but all she got was a "Ganbatte!"

The mother is most likely still alive and its going to be the same damn excuse : "I had no confidence in raising a child. I wanted to die too but I couldn't kill myself"

If you want to make suicide. Do it alone! The poor baby doesn't have any fault of this! I can imagine the chock the husband had receiving the news...

Too many "armchair detectives" - as usual... I"m sure there are millions of reasons why this happened but I'm no about to venture into the hypothesis cited above...

I bet they'll find the mom's body in the water later. God help her if she killed the baby, and left the note as a ruse to start a new life somewhere else.

I totally agree. However, every new mother in Japan is tested for symptoms of PND. This could've been picked up much earlier.

Don't know why @bullfighter got a thumbs-down, so I thumbs-up him/her. The comment wasn't cruel, but rather, a indication that at least someone appreciates an accurate headline. 'Floating in a dam'? Shame on the headline writer! 'Floating near Gifu dam' would be a helluva lot more appropriate, if not accurate. Honestly, some of the writers whose sh*t headlines serve to grab attention for a tabloid like JT should be replaced, if not sent back to the cheap journalism school from which they purportedly graduated.

Psychological treatment needs to be more mainstream and accepted in Japan. How many incidents like this need to happen before this issue gets recognized?

Not a time for the blame game. Many issues need looked at and sorted.

I think generally more needs to be done to care of mothers and fathers after a new bab arrives. The government should give more support, in Holland there is a baby box which gets sent out to new parents which contains some early infant materials which has decreased the mortality rate for babies in Holland by a fair bit.

They do that in Finland, didnt know they did it in Holland too. Its a nice thought, but a baby box of goodies is not going to solve a problem like this.

When I had my second, the ward office at least tried to appear like it gave a crap. It sent out a new mother survey and - to see what would happen as there had been a spate of these stories back then in 2006 - I filled in that I was suffering from depression and had suicidal thoughts. NEVER heard back. Box ticked, job done. There needs to be a proper follow up network with free services available and links to all the delivery clinics and pediatricians in the local area so that at risk individuals have more chance of being identified and approached with offers of help, professional training for those making that approach to convince vulnerable new mothers that there is no stigma attached to their condition, and a nationwide awareness campaign.

Yeah, I know. Dream on.

Postnatal depression, can be severe, long term,physically and emotionally, with no magic wand pull yourself together cure, my Mother suffered sleepless nights. Prosecution is not a solution to clinical depression.
