Body of man found in apartment after mother's body found floating in Nagasaki harbor

Police in Nagasaki are investigating the deaths of an 89-year-old woman and her 65-year-old son whose bodies were found on Saturday.

According to police, the body of Sumie Hirano was found floating by a pier at around 7 a.m. on Saturday, Fuji TV reported. She was taken to hospital but later pronounced dead, police said, adding that her body had no marks of violence.

At around 10 a.m., police then went to her son's apartment where they found the body of her son Akira who had been strangled to death. He was lying on a futon and police believe he was strangled as he slept. The apartment door was unlocked.

Police said Akira, who suffered from an unspecified illness, had been admitted to a hospital on Friday afternoon, but left and went back home. His mother, who did not live with him, was seen by neighbors visiting Akira on Friday night.

Police believe one theory is that his mother killed him and then committed suicide by jumping into the sea.

"one theory is that his mother killed him and then committed suicide by jumping into the sea"

Obviously at 65 years old the son was still a "burden" for the mother... and no one else except the mother could possibly care for the boy... so she had to do what she had to do...

RIP Akira Hirano!! :-(

An 89 year old woman with the strength to strangle?

That's the first thing I thought, but that "unspecified illness" could mean he was incapacitated.
