The dead body of a newborn baby girl was found on a shrine’s grounds in Gifu city, police said Friday.
According to the police, at around 1 p.m. on Thursday, a woman who was walking in Kumano Shrine notified police that there was a suspicious white backpack at the base of a tree on the grounds, Fuji TV reported.
Police found the infant's body inside the backpack. The umbilical cord was still attached to her body, and she was naked.
Police said they are examining street surveillance camera footage in the vicinity of the shrine to try and identify the person or persons responsible for bringing the baby's body to the shrine.

One more time:
Lift the stigma.
Adoption Adoption Adoption!
The youngest are not the lives to discard.

How do you know that? Stillbirths happen. Late stage miscarriages happen. You insult every person who's lived through that and despaired that it must have been her fault. Cruel.

Thumbs-down me until the cows come home, I don't care. Let's stop beating around the bush. That lady killed her baby, or allowed it to die, which is just as bad. Why do we always get a plethora of posts sympathizing and excusing horrible crimes like this?

Not delivering the baby in a hospital raises red-flags for me. Unless the mother couldn't physically get to a hospital, then it looks like she was trying to hide the pregnancy. The final act would be to dispose of the baby.

Yes and no. DNA can identify the mother and father, but only if their DNA is on record and that record is checked by whomever is doing the testing.

In this day and age, with these sorts of incidents I always wonder if it would possible now or in the near future to readily identify the parents/relatives of the deceased newborn through DNA testing.

I agree with Speed :
With emphasis on the "IF"...

Many such kids belong to women whose boyfriends left them and did not take responsibility. I have got to know an associate professor in a university in Beppu who has fathered two children from two women who are now single mothers. In such cases, it is a choice between becoming a single mother with a lifetime of difficulty in Japan, or finishing it by infant murder.

I don't think anyone here knows how or why the baby died yet. If it was stillborn then leaving a baby at a shrine (house of gods) doesn't sound so barbaric. If it were killed by the parent then yes, absolutely awful.

RIP...., It is my belief that the dead are reborn. We come back as our children's children. It is hard for some people to take responsibility for their actions. But if they understood that this newborn could have been their great great grandmother coming back to share her life with the mother of this newborn. Maybe the mother could have found the courage to keep her. RIP..

How barbaric.
