Brazilian man dies after being arrested for attacking police officer in koban

A 39-year-old Brazilian man has died after he was arrested for attacking a police officer in a koban (police box) in Ebina, Kanagawa Prefecture.

According to police, the Brazilian man entered the police box in front of Sagamino Station at around 2:15 a.m. Sunday and started yelling at a 40-year-old officer. The man then picked up a folding chair and hit the police officer on the head, Fuji TV reported. Other police officers subdued the man and he was arrested for assault and obstructing police in the performance of their duty.

However, about 10 minutes after his arrest, the man’s breathing weakened and his face became visibly pale. Police took him to a hospital where he died at around 3:25 a.m.

Police said an autopsy will be held to determine the cause of death.

I am certain there will be those that will side with this Brazilian man, and his supporters angling for the 'xenophobic' and hateful Japanese cops using excessive force against a foreigner.

However, I am certain rational individuals will realize that you simply do not barge into where a police officer is, then pick up an object and assault him with it, and expect no consequences.

Sorry, I have no sympathies for the Brazilian man.

As it happened in a Koban, there should be video footage to either corroborate or disprove the police account of events.

If the video is made public, that should easily clear up any doubts. If the video is not made public, then one might assume the police account is not entirely accurate.

Always terrible when someone suddenly dies, no matter the person or the situation.

I fear that he may have been under the influence of drugs or something, which may have caused or contributed to his death.

The vast majority of Kobans don't have cctv.

I'll assume that.

A man has died. There is way too little information here to be passing such judgement. Especially, as others have noted, that the accuracy of police accounts may vary.

"I fear that he may have been under the influence of drugs or something,"

This is the most likely explanation. He was stone walked in the Koban and started a ruckus. I bet the autopsy will show a large amount of either booze or drugs in his system.

Can we have the cctv footage please so that the JT armchair detectives can investigate.

Those places have cameras??

"...you simply do not barge into where a police officer is, then pick up an object and assault him with it...,"

Indeed. That's why I am a bit suspicious of the police's version of events.

Problem is, the police's duty is to serve and protect, save human lives. IF the man died from the result of the police officer's actions...the officer should be held accountable. Leaving him unaccountable for this death (if it turns out he is responsible for it) would only create another bad cop who will continue to abuse their power.

I don't see any of that here. People just want to know the truth of what happened.

However, I am certain rational individuals will realize that you simply do not barge into where a police officer is, then pick up an object and assault him with it, and expect no consequences.

I'm sure everyone already does realize that.

Sorry, I have no sympathies for the Brazilian man.

Nobody approves of his actions, but he's still a human being who has suddenly died, which is never a good situation.

You are taking Oldman's words out of context.

He was not saying that it's impossible for the man to have done what he did. He didn't say it was implausible.

He said that you don't do such a thing and then expect no consequences from it.

You filtered out those italicized words and thus changed the meaning of what he wrote.

You're not correct if you're implying that people never assault police officers in kobans.

Remember, for instance, the incident last year when a police officer was actually murdered in a koban in Sendai?

While the Japanese police are not known for thier brutality, I'm thinking there may be details missing here.

Why are people voting down this comment? It's an objective truth. In fact most Koban don't even have officers in them

Sorry, I have no sympathies for the Brazilian man.

There are 2 sides to every story and unfortunately 1 side can't be spoken. I grew up not fully trusting the police and media so I will only believe once evidence has been displayed.

Strange, might have been something medical ( some medical issues can make one go crazy ) or drugs...

given the timeline, police did their job quite swiftly in any case...

That was kinda a funny. You got a down vote also, even though what you said about Koban's is true, in our little countryside town the Koban is empty way over half the time, sometimes there is even a police car parked at the Koban, but no police officer to be found, what you said is true, as was the previous comment about cameras. I suppose when Japanese Police officers become violent thugs then body cameras and such will become common like some other countries where police violence is obvious, but until then they only watch the common man in Japan, not the police.

Over use of a taser? How can someone die if subdued?

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Once the person in question has been subdued by police, the police have to cool down and put the person in a cell unharmed.

This is what happened with Rodney King in the U.S. Once the police have control of the subject in question they have to lay off in terms of violence.

It looks like an over-enthusiastic officer went to far with an apparent choke hold.

My image of subdued is like a rugby tackle?

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Correct me if im wrong or post a youtube clip of what subdued looks like

Very simple story but you can't decide unless until you found the truth.

Who is the victim? either COP or Brazilian.

@Kenji Fujimori

Here you go.

subdue: overcome, quieten or to bring under control

Storm

Err any more vague..? I meant how can one die from a tackle to the ground? There must have been a taser or some other weapon the cops used

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Hi Kenji,

I was thinking more along the lines of Eric Garner, who died in 2014 as a result of a New York City police officer's choke hold. It's not the tackle that kills but the strangulation.

I have seen footage in a Japanese prison cell where a violent prisoner was squashed by a team of guards. They and the police undergo regular training in how to render someone unable to move, but if the person can't breathe or has a heart attack and doesn't speak Japanese....

1 ( +1 / -0 )

I am not one to side with police in general, but I see no problem with the cop returning a chair in head gift if attacked.

Let's play the role of an Armchair Doctor conducting this investigation....

Case closed.

Though one wonders if the opposite happened... heart problem leading to brain problem - during which symptoms of anger arises... death follows shortly afterwards. The guy could have been a nice nobody until that incident. I guess we wont really know.
