Chiba prefectural police said Thursday there have been multiple incidents of sewing needles turning up in bread and tofu sold at a supermarket in Kamagaya city.
In the latest case, on Wednesday, an employee at the Minami-kamagaya store of the supermarket chain Maruei contacted police after discovering a pastry containing a sewing needle, Fuji TV reoorted.
According to police reports, a female customer shopping at the same supermarket noticed a needle measuring 4.5 centimeters inside a pastry she purchased on Jan 31 and returned the product. The woman did not report any injuries.
On another occasion, a customer also reported finding a needle inserted into tofu purchased from the store.
Police suspect that the same culprit is responsible for the string of incidents and are analysing the supermarket’s surveillance footage.

Sounds from that weird last sentence as if the police have a suspect, but they need to get absolute proof, catching them in flagrante dilecto. In Japanese they call it 現行犯逮捕 Genkohan Taiho.
