Police said Monday that a Buddhist monk from Tofukuji in Hongo Tokorozawa, Saitama Prefecture, has been arrested for exposing himself in a video rental shop.

According to police, the monk, identified as Shuko Araizumi, 39, entered the shop in Fujimino City at around 6 p.m. on Saturday. NTV quoted police as saying that Araizumi stood next to a female customer and started exposing his lower body. A security officer apprehended him.

Araizumi was quoted by police as saying, "My sexual urge escalated due to stress."

Felonious Monk...

Seems to me that "stress" is used as an excuse for pretty much anything these days... Or it may just be that this monk suddenly realised he chose the wrong career path...

“My sexual urge escalated due to stress.”

Possibly in the "AV" section?

TahoochiJun. 11, 2013 - 01:02PM JST JA_CruiseJun. 11, 2013 - 11:53AM JST I've seen some drink beer and smoke. Many of them also drive Benzes and Lexuses.

You've probably seen the guys who do funeral ceremonies and rites. They are not monks in any sense, more like priests. They also get paid ludicrous amounts in cash for what is essentially sitting down chanting names. (In the area of a million per ceremony in some places, especially rural areas) If the tax dep busted five of these guys they probably wouldn't have to increase the consumption tax for the whole country. The degree of open money grubbing displayed by the Buddhist establishment is one of the things that've surprised me the most since coming to Japan. Perhaps mostly because there's a very strong image in the west of Buddhism as the epitome of a pure character.

The monk's junk put the lady in a funk.

Nobody going to say ... "Saitama"?

One man's stress, another woman's mental scar.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

Stress..so thats what it is! Ive been wondering for an age why everytime my boss yells I have an overwhelming urge to whack him in the face with my clock.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Best reaction (for any lady in this kind of situation) : "Ara ! Kawaii-so ! Is that ALL you have to show ???"

2 ( +5 / -3 )

i thought monks are supposed to be masters of stress manipulation...all that meditation and stuff

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Monk see, monk do.

started exposing his lower body

What? I nearly choked on my dried squid when I read this! What exactly did he show her? "Hey baby, have you ever seen knobbly knees like these?" "My varicose veins are ready to burst, honey-bunny!" "Get an eyeful of these in-growing toe-nails, doll." "Look at the size of these haemoroids, hussy." Laugh? I almost pooed me pants (just below my body's midway point). (OK, can't spell heammoroids; can you?)

It's all an Illusion, hommmmm

1 ( +4 / -3 )

A celibate lifestyle is completely unrealistic. The only stress this monk was suffering from was self-inflicted.

ares7Jun. 11, 2013 - 09:29AM JST One man's stress, another woman's mental scar.

This was a crime, but not for that reason. It was a crime because there could have been kids nearby. However, if an adult woman is mentally scarred by seeing some guys frank and beans then it is a self-inflicted injury.

Between kiddie diddler priests back home, and self-exposing monks in Japan, I guess it's that much more shocking and disappointing when people who are trusted do sick things. (J-cops are an exception because I don't trust'em to begin with!)

1 ( +2 / -1 )

He should have chosen the AV industry as that seems to be his real passion. Monks leave a slow life, guess he had pent up frustrations.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

My sexual urge escalated due to stress.

for all this time i thought stress lowers one's sexual urge.

thank buddha i was wrong!

she should've turned to him & said " ara maa hentai..ano tsumayoji wa do shiomowanai jan yo!!

Monks leave a slow life, guess he had pent up frustrations.

Wait for Hashimoto to pipe in: "Monks should visit brothels to relieve their stress!" ....all kidding aside though, many monks do not leave a "slow life". I've seen some drink beer and smoke. Many of them also drive Benzes and Lexuses.

So, not just police and train drivers then...

I think I'm gonna upchuck my just-consumed dinner. Gross!

@Magnus Roe Yep. Probably the last time a Buddhist priest shocked someone this much was when he handed them a bill for a kaimyo.

Stellar, absolutely stellar comment!

That does not make sense, the idea of being a monk is to let go of such drives and stress is suffering, recognised via contemplation and meditation.

I bet the woman was "enlightened" when he got his lad out.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

"video rental shop"

They still have those?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

@rowiko there's nothing that's not legitimate about having stress as an excuse. If you were at peace then obviously you wouldn't feel the need to do such risky things, right? Logic.

the "lower body" is an awfully large area for mr. long johnson to cover

surprised to see 41 comments on Budhism in less than an hour

Best reaction I've ever heard from a woman to a flasher in Japan; "Wow! You have two bellybuttons!"

A Monk who drunk SAKE

I know a lot of the comments are jokes, but a lot of the "monks are supposed to be pure/ Buddhism lets you get beyond desire" comments are very funny. Imagine a Japanese person saying that kind of thing about Christianity in America.

There are sincere buddhists just like there are sincere Christians, but any otherworldly or perfect or absolute image of Buddhism is just your own "prejudice". Any organization run for hundreds/ thousands of years is going to be about justifying and preserving itself as much as it is about "helping" any of its members. And any big organization will have messed up ppl in it like this story.

magnus-

And monks who drink beer not being "real" monks- I'd like to know what a real monk is, and how it is that you can know it for a fact!

How unenlightened.....

"started exposing his lower body"

sushilover: "What exactly did he show her? "Hey baby, have you ever seen knobbly knees like these?"

Har!

So monks are people too?? Oh my god/Buddha!!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

at least he is not gay or a pervert molesting young children at the temple or .... penalty should be to put him in a lock in town square.. exposed

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Monkshood is dangerous...

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

He may come out of this Monk position. We cant blame him, Because every one have the hormonal force and its nature, we cant change that nature, if we try to change or control, then it will become a stress or it tends to mental disease, and then its hard to cure with medicines. Better thing is perfect practice of yoga and meditation will help to control these things at some extent , and at the same time, In gods creation, we cant control the things against nature.

How can he be stressed? He's a monk.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Internet give him to much stress because some content is to easily accessible.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

He can just unrobe and quit to be monk if he can't celibate rather than to violate Vinaya (monk's rules).

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

One of the most important teachings by Buddha is to get rid of all desires, isn't it?

Mamma mia, he couldn't wait until he got home. Just looking at the vid packages??? I have never been THAT aroused (have you?), or I don't recall such a strong feeling rising at all.

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

This story is a classic! "Hey lady wanna see my stick and budda beads"

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

I wonder which part of this monk did the Security Guard "apprehend?" He obviously hasn"t reached "enlightenment" then.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

A security officer apprehended him.

One really has to wonder why these Rent-A-Cops are getting involved, when their only function is to protect property, catch shoplifters in the act and alert authorities... They aren't Police Officers...... LOL...

You would think, that the Insurance Companies would start telling these store, flat out, "Look we're going to drop your insurance coverage if you keep employing these over-zealous nut-jobs, you report crime, you don't enforce it... It's NOT your job..."

Just another example poor judgement, on the part of the monk and the "security officer..."
