Police in Niigata City on Tuesday arrested a 36-year-old Buddhist monk on suspicion of assaulting a woman in her 30s by beating her with a hardwood stick.

According to police, the incident occurred on a sidewalk in a residential area at around 2 a.m. Tuesday. Local media reported that a passerby called police and said a man was repeatedly beating a woman about the head and neck with a wooden stick.

Police rushed to the scene and detained the man. The woman was taken to hospital to be treated for minor injuries, police said.

Police said the monk has admitted to the charge and that he and the woman knew each other. They said they are questioning both of them about the source of trouble between them.

Maybe he took his Keisaku (警策) (Kyosaku in Soto Zen) duties much too seriously.

Send him back to harsh training in the strictest Buddhist camp.

Moral of this story- "Don't mess with a monk in the early hours."

Yeah, I used to work with a load of monks and I can tell you that they don’t seem to live by their own teachings very much. Drinking too much, eating meat, driving expensive cars, etc.

The Buddhist monks in Japan aren't exactly pious and are in it for the money that I have seen!

My Aunt married a monk he's very addicted to pachinko and regularly visits to a hostess bar.

A fitting punishment would be for him to pay tax on his income like everyone else.

Cowardly piece of scum needs a stint in jail to sort him out. See how "tough" he is.

She has certainly been enlightened regarding what type of person he is!

How peaceful of him.

Buddhist temples are hereditary affairs in Japan so I suspect this is some guy who took over the family business without his heart in it.

How peaceful of him.

Not becoming of a 'man of the cloth', no matter what religion it may be. In this case he may have to be reborn as an animal for doing this crap.
