Car being chased by police crashes, killing driver

A car being chased by a police patrol car in Sakai, Osaka, early Thursday morning, crashed, killing the driver.

According to police, the car was seen leaving the parking lot of a closed pachinko parlor at around 3 a.m. Thursday, TBS reported. The car stopped at a red light but when the patrol car came up behind it, it took off, going through the red light.

The police car, with siren on, gave chase for about two kilometers, including going the wrong way along a one-way street, before the car being pursued flipped over and crashed.

Police said the driver was a 37-year-old man who managed a bar, but have so far given no reason as to why he might have fled when the patrol car approached him.

Could it be astynomiaphobia?

You rarely if ever see a police car actually give chase the wrong way down a street; it only increases the level of danger. But comments critical of cops are a dime a dozen on this site so I'll just end there.

Pachinko+ Bar Manager + Run away = Drug

The police chased me down a one-way street once. I accidentally turned left on a straight arrow. The cops were parked right there and gave chase. I wasn't in the mood (didn't have time for that bs) so I took advantage of being on a scooter, weaved through traffic, then pulled a u-turn through a park to the left. The cops gave chase around the park (big park) via a one-way street, going the wrong way. By the time they were on the other side of the park, I just made a quick return to the street and left them, quite literally, in my dust.

I only fear 白バイ.

GOOD! Quick and swift justice. One less mouth to feed in prison. Feel bad for the cop with the mountain of paperwork I imagine he or she will have to do.

The cost of being a moron. If you're gonna do stupid crap, you have to be prepared to pay the consequences.

My guess is he was just drunk. Pretty stupid to run a red light in front of the cops though. If he'd sat there and did nothing he would still be alive today.

maybe he just watched some Michael Bay flick and got really inspired by it?

3 am, so not many cars on the street I guess. and since the guy was going that way anyway, it probably didn't really make a difference. lets just be glad that only the guy running away died!

There are taxis out though, they're often wilder drivers than police in pursuit. It's not like accidents like this happen often though.

OSAKA + Bar Manager + Tatoo ? = YAKUZA

I can only go WOW!!

Unless the runaway guy had taken someone else's life, i couldn't get myself to be OK with the loss of another human life. That being said, it was indeed dumb to take the risk that he did. If he had slowed down and surrendered, he'd be alive.

Time for Japanese police to adopt stick-on GPS trackers that cops in other countries use. Japanese police re among the lowest tech in the developed world.

Car being chased by police crashes, killing driver

What a weird headline.

It almost makes it look like the police were at fault!

The guy tried to run away from the police, crashed his car and killed himself.

He did it.

A lot of Osakans hate the police to the point they never go to a police box to ask for directions or bother to report a car accident/home break-in. Twice I have seen the same situation: police stops car, walks up to car, car speeds off.

Police departments have been implementing guidelines on when to maintain a "hot pursuit" and when to back-off in order to avoid this kind of result. I don't know if Japan has implemented the guidelines or if the police chasing this car was following any established guidelines. The police officer may have done everything exactly "by the book" on his end and the driver of the other car STILL killed himself when he lost control of his vehicle. The headline summarizes the situation perfectly without assigning blame to anyone.
