Police in Yamato, Kanagawa Prefecture, have arrested a 50-year-old male caregiver on suspicion of assaulting an 87-year-old female nursing home resident.
Police said Kisai Sugita is accused of hitting the elderly woman’s head and face with a cell phone, Sankei Shimbun reported. The incident occurred during Sugita’s night shift on Aug 24-25.
Police quoted doctors as saying the victim suffered injuries which will require two months to recover from.
The woman’s relatives consulted police after noticing an unusual swelling on her face. Sugita’s cell phone was later found to contain photos of him abusing the woman by covering her face with a blanket and pinching her nose.
Police said Sugita has admitted to the charge and quoted him as saying, “I got mad at her because she wouldn’t go to sleep.”

The fact that he photographed himself abusing her is not going to help him. he needs putting away for long time.
There is a nasty tendency towards bullying present in male Japanese, you see it in many company management structures and it was certainly evident in WW2.

It takes a certain kind of person to deal with elderly people on a daily basis. They could be dealing with seniors with life-threatening issues, second childhoods, or memory loss. All can put lots of stress on the caregiver.
To reduce this kind of abuse, more training and support should be provided to caregivers. In addition, they should be provided mandatory counseling like psychiatrist. Psychiatry is the only medical profession that I know of that requires practitioners to have routine counseling with another peer to discuss their mental issues related with dealing with other people's problems all the time.
They realize that interacting with people dealing with stressful issues affect all those involved with that individual including the healthcare worker! Thus, it may affect the quality of treatment the patient receives.

No spontaneous striking out of frustration here. The fact that he has photos shows a deliberate act of violence that he wanted to “savor” afterwards

The simple fact that he photographed himself doing it means that it was not a one-off slip. If he was so annoyed, unamused or frustrated by the job, he could have been a bouncer or some other job. After all, he did have some qualifications (he is/was a caregiver, right?). Professionalism is out of the question. I'm not saying it's always easy at work, but this is extreme.

Worker in this industry don't last long, 7 years is the average due to burn out. Expose to death daily. It is physically hard. There is a lot of lifting of clients when a mechanic lifter takes time. Plus they have to do all their duties with empathy which is the hardest part of the job. Having to be nice to every client plus keep up a good working relationship with co workers also well long hours for low pay. All this take its toll. There is no regular counciling of these workers because of the low pay rate it deem a over expense. When they do commit to weekly or regular counciling, these events will happen more often.
