A 38-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of stabbing a passerby in Mito, Ibaraki Prefecture, police said Friday.

According to police, the man, who has been named as Takashi Tsubowa, stabbed a passing 76-year-old man on Thursday morning. The man suffered minor injuries.

TBS quoted police as saying that Tsubowa then turned himself in at a nearby police station. He was quoted as saying, "I didn't have enough money to live on. I thought if I committed a crime and got arrested, I could live in prison."

What? Parents finally kicked you out? Get a dang job you lazy SOB, stop trying to get people to take care of you.

Ha, ha! Classic! First offense and he has pleaded guilty. He will not go to jail. He'll get a suspended sentence and be back on the streets of Mito looking for another chance. Nut case!

Did he have to hurt someone to accomplish his goal?

I have heard similar incidents but he could have just stolen something cheap at a nearby konbini or supermarket instead of stabbing somebody, jesus.

Well done Japan, don't give out unemployment benefits you said, even the laziest in society will find work that way you said.

He could have gotten arrested by smoking a marijuana joint at the police station. A simple (and safe) non violent crime. No need to steal or go out and stab someone. I'm sure the paperwork in such a case would be minimal.

At the level of one marijuana cigarette a week for 49 years, or one joint a day for 7 years, there was no decline in lung function, according to a paper published by the Journal of the American Medical Association.

This is so sad... OMG when people think there is no way out, they do random crazy, and sometimes evil things. I wish the man a speedy recovery.

Someone who would do this is obviously a psychopath, he should be off the streets and locked up, he`s a menace to society. I hope this stands as a warning to all psychopaths and anti-social, selfish types. This is what happens to psychopaths with such unpleasant personalities that they get to 76 and they have no friends or family that cares about them enough to keep them off the streets.

I can think of an easier way, like walking into the police station and saying "Can I see a list of your unsolved cases?"... then just go down the list, pick the a dozen or so that don't look too awful and say, "Okay, see those dozen I marked? i did those. Where do I sign on the confession?".

In any other country in the world the cops would kick you out of the station, but in Japan they'd probably jump at it as a chance to improve their crime stats and get their fat bonuses for solving crimes.

No kidding. He should have robbed a 7-11 or something. At least he'd have some INSTANT cash to buy some stuff with on his way to the Koban.

By injuring someone gives authorities a reason to take him off the street as a danger to society, while smoking Js or knocking off stuff is not a threat to life. I can see his resoning. When The education and societal system develops its citizens to become dependant on it, when a few people can not fit in such a system the choices become limited by there interlect or circumstance.

He should gone up to Fukushima and worked for the yaks.

Background checks for knife purchases would be a start.

this is regrettable.

...then turned himself in at a nearby police station.

This is the only way the guilt-driven social conditioning of Japan ever pays off.

The 76 year old was the one that was stabbed. The "psychopath" that stabbed him was 38 years old.

what an idiot..just go punch a cop in the face, so much easier

No reason to stab an innocent passerby. Just walk into a koban and slug a cop or two. It will get you into the slammer for a day or two only though. Long time in the clink would be a more serious assault.

Stabbed someone? He should have lobbed a brick through a 7-11 window.

This type of thing happens quite often in my good old hometown L.A. except the suspect steals something.

Should be stabbed himself... and if you let him out he might attack a baby next time..

Should put the prisoners to work on chain-gangs.

Cloak and Stagger....

“I didn’t have enough money to live on. ==who's fault is that?

"I thought if I committed a crime and got arrested" ==break the law, stain your familiy koseki tohon?

I could live in prison.” ===sorry Diaper Desperado, its not a bed of roses...

The best punishment for this sub-human would not to be locked up in prison, but to take care of the innocent victim he stabbed until they are fully recovered. The 76 year old man may need some assistance, especially if he is not able to work due to his minor injuries. One question on this article, did he apologize to the man after stabbing him?

ask the konbini for advice first before stabbing someone.

Cramp. Agree. And also likely to be more desrved and to end up with custodial sentence for 1st offence.
