A cat with a crossbow bolt in its body was found outside the entrance to a woman’s home in Koka, Shiga Prefecture, police said, adding the person responsible faces a charge of violating the animal protection law.
According to police, the woman found the cat at around 1 p.m. on Monday after hearing the animal cry, Fuji TV reported. She opened her front door and saw the cat with a bolt, about 30 cms long, embedded in its backside. The woman took the cat, which is not her pet, to a vet who removed the bolt. The cat's life is not in danger.
Police are analyzing street surveillance camera footage to see if they can determine if someone brought the cat to the woman’s house or shot at it from a vehicle.

So I wonder what would the police do if a crime happens in a super rural area with absolutely no street surveillance cameras? Though a good opportunity to find out who did it, but in my office, we call it lazy work. They can check to find who in that area bought or ordered the items used in this crime. Check the arrow for fingerprints! Do some actual grunt work.

Believed to be a combination of road traffic accidents and foxes.

Really?
The first time I ever visited my now host country, I found completely the opposite. Thought the cats and dogs were much friendlier than in Europe and the US. How odd!
Possibly. But there's cruel people in every country. Not just stories like this, but those who keep wild animals in captivity or for show or as status symbols.

Animals here seem shook, or like they are weary of humans. I see lots of cats, but if you approach them they run. Back where Im from, never see that, they come and brush on you for food, petting. The dogs here seem so sad also. Ive seen birds missing eyes and other cruelty. I truly believe its some kind of abuse being meted out on them

Reminds me of the cat killer in London, some years back. Don't know if they were ever caught?
Clearly not, but they certainly need round the clock supervision. People who torture and kill animals need to be studied, find out why they do such horrific things.

Ive seen this allot in Japan, I think its a manifestion of some kind of mental illness, like a way to abuse something in order to release stress.
Many cats are shy towards humans and the dogs look sad

@Maria ... in some countries they are used for game hunting...

@Maria
It might have been Geralt of Rivea. I suspect he was aiming at a nearby Lurker but missed.

Who has a crossbow, and why are they even being sold?

Unbearably cruel, but with some kind and gentle exceptions, such is the world we live in.
