Police warn parents after 5 cats, dog poisoned in Chiba park

Police have warned parents to stop their children from touching food and other objects found lying on the ground in and around a park in Sakae, Chiba Prefecture, on suspicion that poisoned food is being deliberately left in the area.

Suspicions were aroused last month when a man walking his dog in Juo park was forced to rush the animal to a vet after it became unable to stand. While the vet treated the animal, the man returned to the park and found a sausage coated in a blue liquid. Investigators believe the substance may have been a poison containing car antifreeze or ethylene glycol, Sankei Shimbun reported.

According to the vet, the dog ingested some kind of substance that attacked its nervous system and depleted the calcium in its blood. The dog was admitted to the veterinary clinic for several days and then released with a clean bill of health.

The park is situated in a residential area and local authorities have warned that five dead cats have been reported in the area since September. Police believe the poisonings may have been deliberate and are urging parents to control their pets and prevent their children from picking up objects left on the ground.

One lick of that stuff can kill a dog. There is another sicko in town.

what now? toxic sausages in parks?

Does it have any connection to the poisonous material chemical that was stolen from a construction site shed, earlier this year ?

Is somebody planning another community poisoning, I wonder ?

Glad to see that the police have stepped up patrols and... oh, no, they haven't. Just advice to control children and pets.

Well, that should please the poisoner.

Someone has no life...spending their time doing this....

Another nutcase on the lose. I hope he does not escalate to humans next.

Need to put cameras in the park and catch this nutjob. If it was at my local park, I be hiding in the bushes all day and night to catch a nut like this. Bring me one of these nutcases and a bottle of antifreeze, see what I would do to them. I just love animals cats and dogs and i treat them equal to a human being!

People with nothing better to do.

I wondered if it wasn't an assassin, or just a regular murderer, who was testing out a new weapon. ie testing his poison on animals before using it.

that's just plain wrong! poor little dogs walking around and finds a sausage and it's poisoned. I hope they find the culprit and make him or her eat one of the sausages.

Time to come up with a 'don't eat poison' mascot! I think maybe a smiling dog, with fluffy yellow wings.

@smith

Already got that down here in Kyushu. It's the mascot of the town of Hainuzuka (羽犬塚). No connexion with poison, though....

Stray cats are considered vermin, and families of them often live in neighbourhood 'parks' .Someone in the area must have thought this'd be a grand way to kill the yowling cats.

I bet s/he's sweating now, bloody idiot.

Can someone tell me, is this actually a crime?

For example, if someone was doing it to kill off stray cats (as Maria above me suggested) and without ill intent to harm pets or children, would that person be arrested? And charged with what?

Of course, if it was some Ojisan fed up of the local strays getting in his garbage, this was a dumb way to go about solving his problem. Lets just all hope its not something more sinister .. ><

Reckless endangerment of the public? Littering with harmful substances? Animal cruelty? Being really stupid? I can think of any number of charges...

Now everyone knows what to do about annoying dogs in the neighborhood...

No doubt this is another nutter with a stray animal tiff. Hope they catch this nutcase before a kid does get poisoned. And, hopefully, it is just a few poisoned sausages and not a wide spread poisoning.

kimuzukashiiii: Simple. Cruelty to animals. Strays or not, wild or not, poisoning animals is wrong.

Cruelty to animals. This is gross, hope this sicko gets caught and put behind bars, menace to the public..

Cat Killer is on the loose !!!!

That's messed up. The most heinous criminals throughout history always start with animal abuse/ cruelty. They should catch this guy before it's too late. Install security cams or something.

Yes, it is a crime.

Pest control companies will be surprised to learn that.

Cats are no more pests than humans are. To insinuate a mere scavenger as one is ludicrous.

Agree with you 100% southsakai. I live in Chiba. I'd be more than happy to put you up so that you can hide in the bushes and catch this guy. Room, board, travel expenses, etc. You just have to promise you stay until either you or somebody else catches him. I'd even buy the anti-freeze for you to use on this person. What do you say?
