"The defendant's demeanor of ignoring the victim's personality is evident,"

What does that even mean?

Prosecutors sought five years for Yamada,...

Even that is too short. Give them at lease 10 years.

One can only wonder what the outcome would have been if the perp was gaijin Disgusting outcome!!

Prosecutors sought five years for Yamada, while the defense sought a suspended sentence, saying the crime was not planned and he showed remorse.

My head hurts from banging against the wall here again! Recommended a suspended sentence because it wasnt planned and he was sorry?

3 years for ruining the life of a young woman! I pray she gets the care needed and also pray that she is able to move on with her life!

Chiba University medical student Mineto Masuda, 23, was given a three-year suspended sentence for raping the woman later that night after taking her to his home.

Spot the defendant with the bigwig grandfather!

And a former doctor at Chiba University Hospital was given a two-year suspended sentence for indecent conduct.

Maybe this guy, too. His name's not even mentioned in the article!

Does this also mean that these students and the doctor will be barred from ever practicing medicine?

This sounds like Japanese students from affluent families got off easy while the others are treated as the fall guys to satisfy all parties involved.

That sounds planned to me. What was the reason he was given a suspended sentence? There doesn't seem to be much rational in these decisions other than their family names. SMH!

3 years?! That's it??

A mandatory sentencing regime deters rape. These men conspired with the specific intent to commit rape, fully aware of harm the assault would inflict on the victim.

Can somebody please name that "formal doctor" ?

How about liability of the restaurant? Never saw a restaurant with a gang bang going on at a neighboring table,,,

3 years? How about a life sentence? Show no mercy to the defendants, such an atrocious act should be punishable by the full extent of the law!

It's disgusting that regular people will be publicly named and shamed for the most minor of misdemeanors but a former doctor of a prominent university (!!!) will not even be named for this heinous crime. The hypocrisy is overwhelming in this country.

@ toolonggone Today 06:13 am JST "The defendant's demeanor of ignoring the victim's personality is evident," What does that even mean?

It means ignoring the personhood of the victim; the fact that they were victimizing and a fellow human being, not some inanimate object or piece of property. Other newsites have it translated as "humanity".

Damn sickening bunch. What goes on in their heads? Who raises these people? Did they all go to all boys schools? Do they really think of women as non-human / other?

In my book rape should mean 10 to 25 years. However, a very important point to consider is that if the sentences for rape were increased to 10 years minimum, then the aggressors may consider having to silence their victims to escape that punishment, including murdering them. This is the considered legal reason why sentences for rape seem so lenient - to consider the real threat of murder.

I would like to think that all of those charged will be struck off, which is the biggest punishment for them. Can JT elaborate on that question?

taj: Thank you. That was a total crap translation. I suppose I could have spent time trying to guess at what the translator meant but I get enough of that in my daily life and expect better from a news site. Thanks for doing their work for them!

IIRC, a robber gets a longer jail term than a raper

Three years for rape? Utterly disgusting, the punishment does not fit the crime.
