It's widely known that he worked for PLA intelligence. Why even bother denying it?
Herve Nmn L'Eisa
Official policy is typically denial, so no surprise.

He no spy, no no! He just like Japan very much so he just like to gather information about Japan, no spy no spy??
Thomas Anderson
I don't know why you would need spies in this day and age.

Can anyone remember any Government putting their hands up and admiting that someone is one of their spies? So why is this news?

spy or no spy, Chinese or whatever, if you open bank accounts with a fake ID you should get arrested. I don't know what "unauthorized commercial activities" means. If China shelters this guy from prosecution, despite proof of illegal activities in Japan, that's a serious diplomatic problem. regardless of the spy factor

I wonder if when Japanese spies get caught they go overboard in confessing like all the other criminals here. Yes, I spied and I'm truly sorry. And I spied on 50 other countries too, and this is how I did it.

Not true. While diplomatic immunity prevents prosecution, they CAN (and did) expel the diplomat from Japan.

Me no spy, me only really like Japan, so I take lots of pictures of secret naval bases, secret submarines with nuclear missiles etc..but me no spy for China, TRUST ME!!!

Yeah, the current US administration admitted that the Pakistani doctor was their spy; look what happened to him. I guess the Chinese guy has diplomatic immunity and will just be sent home. But me thinks China doth protest too much.

So..uh a diplomat was doing his job, now the authorities are aware that he was doing his job and the public is somewhat uneasy after learning the fact that diplomats have jobs other than singing off visa applications and appear at state dinners?
