Japan spying? They don't need it if they have google.

I'm going to assume the spying was during his stint in Tokyo. Interesting that it took almost six years after he departed Tokyo for China to reel him back in.

The information he gave to Japan was a fake, pulling him out and execute the couple--either true or fake--and intentionally leaking the true or fake news through a true or fake newspaper, is to convince Japanese government that the information they got was true, not fake. A la Midway cipher battle.

Google "does china execute spies" and the answer is yes.

Considering how easy a target Japan's intelligence would be for China, I'd rather have Japan get some stronger intelligence gathering skills because China can clearly undermine Japan a bit easier than Japan can undermine China... although China has been known to shoot itself in the foot more on a global stage than not.

Japan is known only for its utter dependence on the US.

So are you saying Japan should start up agencies like the CIA, NSA and others? This should go down really well with the already tin-foil hat paranoia crowd.

If true, I for one would would be very surprised Japan has the intelligence capability to recruit any spy

Apparently you are not aware that each recruitment is different as the people involved "sign up" for a variety of reasons.

@Kazuaki Shimazaki Japan's intelligence is certainly not non-existent, but is very weak and so having a spy of this level would have been a major coup for them. Any ambassador-level diplomat would be privy to valuable information via their security clearance level, so having been assigned to Iceland for a few years would not detract from the value of the contact. .

@legacy58 It is no secret Japan's intelligence services are weak but that's not the same as they not having any at all. And embassy workers working in your country are relatively easy snares. You will notice they didn't get anyone too important - ambassador to Iceland is less important than a lower ranking person to a more important embassy.

Political infighting within the CCP. Thats how communist systems work.

If true, I for one would would be very surprised Japan has the intelligence capability to recruit any spy, let alone a Chinese Ambassadorial level one. In intelligence, Japan is known only for its utter dependence on the US.

China's envoy to Iceland arrested for spying for Japan

I could be completely wrong of course however, to me it looks like he was "spying AGAINST" Japan, not "FOR"...

China spying for Japan..... hahahah what a joke, that would never happen

...it's basically China's domestic issue and therefore the Japanese government would like to refrain from commenting.

I like this train of thought.

an article written by Ma in an Icelandic newspaper in February, in which he criticized Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s visit to the Yasukuni Shrine last year.

Scary ! China can pick their foreign ambassador and label them spies. Very disturbing.
