I agree with the posters who say things swing both ways.

Perhaps the recent fishing boat incursions are just a series of unrelated coincidences. Careful consideration of the facts and subsequent actions should take precendence over nationalist sentiment.

Maybe China, Korea and Russia can start enforcing their own EEZ boundaries and start arresting more Japanese fishermen and if found guilty, send them to Siberian labor camp.

I agree and would like to see that.... because we can mess up and go to their waters but they can't come here?? How ridiculous is that?

Article states: "Chinese crew members on board, were seized while they were fishing in the Sea of Japan (East Sea), off Ishikawa Prefecture within Japan’s exclusive economic zone."

The problem is EEZ has alot of overlapping with neighboring countries. The exclusive economic zone is up to 200 nautical miles and Japan has disputes over its EEZ boundaries with all its Asian neighbors (Russia, Republic of Korea, PRC and ROC). Japan's claimed boundaries, and the problem is they do not take into account neighboring powers' claims. Maybe China, Korea and Russia can start enforcing their own EEZ boundaries and start arresting more Japanese fishermen and if found guilty, send them to Siberian labor camp.

The illegal activity was detected off-shore—not on the Japanese soil. The authorities had no choice to release the Chinese crew possibly due to insubstantial evidence for serious damages or threat to national interests and/or citizens. They can’t extend the detention period unless there’s enough room for the authorities to prove that suspicious acts could lead to such consequence.

The fact of the matter is that we have this right-wing nuts that are probably VIP members in nationalistic websites like 2ch, and then they come here and spew filth. He wishes that the chinese crew were jailed for a long time, so what if it was a japanese crew fishing illegally in russian waters? cut them loose just because they are "japanese"? That's not how it works. You can't have someone locked up indefinitely just because of their nationality. If in fact these Chinese messed up and ended up near here, doesn't mean that they did it in purpose, it could have been a natural mistake, but then, it could have been otherwise, who knows...

it would be depressing if every mis behaviour by the chinese was reported on the news. there wouldnt be enough air time.

As if China don't have enough citizen to be sent here that they need single person to go twice. BTW, Japan couldn't afford to risk their people currently living in China. If the crews are not released, retaliation could be under way. Maybe the relation is not plan by C-government but we've seen how they allow it to take place before. What we are facing now is a new nature of foreign policy - 'think ourselves first' and 'we always right'.

How many of these so called anti-J activists can get into a Japanese soil as illegal immigrants regarding that Japan’s airport and coast guard security is much more reliable and tougher than most developed countries? You need evidence to back up your argument.

It seems the Japanese media did not think the topic merited public interest so publishing may be a waste of space its iether that or goverment decided the information was not in the public interest. Smithinjapan has a point when he mentions Japanese incursions into Russian terrortorial waters, iether by design or accident. I am sure the captains of the trawlers are relieved to be back home with thier families and that another crisis has been evaded

If this news is true(since I have not been able to verify from other sources) then they must have paid the fine. There was no resistance of arrest resulting to physical damage to the Japanese coast guards so it should just be monetary penalty against the captain like always.

As I said before, they could not have kept them or detained them much longer, let alone really charged them with anything. The best they can do is put these men's names on lists and warn them that if caught again they can face charges (even then, I'm not sure they can). This is not the same thing as the incident last year -- that Chinese captain literally hit a Japanese ship (whose fault it is is still a question).

If Japan for some reason went against the rules and detained these men for longer than they had, it would have set a dangerous precedent for other nations to do the same when Japan, which it often does, illegally fishes in other territories (especially Russia). You cannot jail people based on unwarranted desire for revenge (over an incident which didn't directly involve them, for that matter!).

PM Kan and his China supporting government should resign right now. We japanese are embarassed and shamed by bully Communist chinese again. This would never happen under LDP they would always stand up to bullying. I am so angry that Japanese government has again followed orders of evil communist China.
