Police in Nishinomiya City, Hyogo Prefecture, have arrested a 20-year-old female college student on suspicion of attempting to kill her ex-boyfriend by hitting him in the head with a hammer and stabbing him in the back with a knife.
According to police, they received an emergency call around 1 p.m. on July 23 from a resident of an apartment, who said that a man had been stabbed on the fourth floor. When police arrived at the scene, they found a a 21-year-old male student of Kwansei Gakuin University, who had been beaten about the head with a hammer, stabbed in the back with a kitchen knife, and shot with a stun gun, Fuji TV reported. He was rushed to the hospital and was in a stable condition, police said Monday.
Police said the victim's former girlfriend, Yuna Nawate, also a student at Kwansei Gakuin, was splattered with the victim’s blood and was arrested at the scene. The weapons used in the attack were found in the apartment.
Police said Nawate and the victim had broken up several days before the attack. She was quoted by police as saying, “When I asked my ex-boyfriend to get back together, he turned me down, so I lost my temper and tried to kill him."

People being interrogated are guided into saying things that will assist the prosecution against them. They don't have access to a lawyer and the interrogation is not recorded.
That's why all these confessions look the same every time.

Reminds me of a couple found dead in the early 90s who I read about in the paper then: the police reported one knife next to two bodies - he had been stabbed 32 times back and front and her 35 times including 17 times in the back (yes, I remember the numbers), and the police put it down to suicide!!!
And the knives, always wonder if they are like those ones sold in hundred yen shops used in local sasupensu dorama murders?

My favorite part of police reports on JT is the utterly sane, local, rational explanations that the perpetrator often gives for ridiculously emotional, violent acts. Is this is a result of the J-E translation? Do police investigators routinely take confessions and tighten them up for grammar and syntax before releasing them to the media? Somehow if this were to happen back in my home country, I would imagine her kicking and screaming and swearing at the police, refusing to talk, babbling, confused, contradicting, etc. Yet here, there's always a well-reasoned explanation that ties everything together neatly.
