A man arrested for passing himself off as a doctor has been sentenced to four years in jail by the Tokyo District Court.
The man, who has been named as 44-year-old Miyabi Kuroki, passed himself off as a physician using forged medical qualifications and gave fake medical checks to sick patients, TBS reported Wednesday.
The court heard that Kuroki secured part-time work at four medical institutions in the capital and defrauded them of around 25 million yen in salaries.
Kuroki was also fined 2 million yen by the court.
The presiding judge said, "The defendant's lack of training could very well have delayed diagnoses and caused irreparable harm to the health of the patients who were seeking professional medical help. He deserves the strongest condemnation for putting others in harm's way to serve his own greed."

4 years in jail and a fine of less than 10% of the amount he defrauded them of? This is the "strongest condemnation" they could muster?

Does the defrauding of 25m yen in salaries mean that he was able to 'work' and 'earn' this much money but was then found not to be a qualified doctor? If so, that's amazing. How long would it take him to earn that much posing as a doctor? 1 year? More? How many patients would he have seen in that time? How much interaction would he have had with other medical staff? In other countries there would be a thorough investigation of how he was able to carry off this deception because fake documents is far too lame an excuse.

No criminal charges??

It doesn't really say much for the training and conduct of medical professionals here, when someone can pretend to be a doctor, and no-one notices the difference. Then again, the usual health-check is just a matter of ticking off boxes on a few sheets of paper, a couple of bodily fluid samples, and vague comments on following up later.

How long was he employed there?

Wow...luckily no one was harmed or died from this quack.

'Do you concur doctor?'
Just like 'Catch Me if You Can' with Leonardo DiCaprio
I think this sounds absolutely crazy to see this in the modern world, Do you concur??

We do not know if no one was harmed or not, he could have easily misdiagnosed someone that worsened the situation for many. What a total con artist and unbelievable that the hospital did not know. I am curious to how they found out, probably patients thought something was wrong and reported to the hospital.

How did he get hired in the first place? no background check? previous works schools etecetera.

I'm assuming patients reported irregular behavior from the doctor to the hospital. "Doctor why are you putting the stethoscope to my foot?" "It's a new way of checking lungs, don't talk now"

Yet the average lifespan here is still much higher than the country you come from.

When I got a job in a university here I had to account for just about every day of my life. I had to get letters from every school I attended since the age of five, every job I had ever had, including part-time jobs. (In fact, some of the people who employed me had died - I had to get proof they had died!) I had to get criminal checks done in every country I had worked in. I had to get an expensive health check done. It was an unbelievable hassle. This was for a job with a two-year contract and the only harm I could have done would have been to be a crap English teacher and prevented my students from becoming the fluent English-speaking, international people they became (irony). The mistake I made was not applying for a job as a doctor. No hassles and lots more money!

Just goes to show you what kind of people could end up working in such fields here. Do they even bother to check backgrounds before hiring people? I know you don't need any qualifications to be a politician, but a doctor?!

It's clearly indicative of how crap the average doctor is in Japan when a guy off the street can just pass himself off as a doctor and nobody notices...!
