Convenience store employee stabbed in botched Christmas eve robbery

A convenience store employee was stabbed in a botched robbery attempt in Kawagoe, Saitama Prefecture, on Monday night.

According to police, the would-be robber entered a Lawson convenience store at around 8:20 p.m. brandishing a knife, Fuji TV reported. He then demanded cash and threatened an 18-year-old worker with the knife. However, when the Lawson employee refused and attempted to grab his arm, the man stabbed him in the abdomen and fled the store empty-handed, police said.

The employee was taken to hospital where doctors said Tuesday that his wounds were not life-threatening. His assailant was described as being around 170cm in height, wearing a black down jacket, black pants and a white surgical mask.

Stupid, let the guy have the companies money, not worth your life.

Cameras everywhere, so hopefully the knucklehead is caught.

dumb guy, cannot imagine they pay him enough to fight with someone brandishing a knife. Only way i would take on someone if they give me armour and a pair of nunchakus.

Just give the criminals the money. Not worth it to take a knife to the belly.

Do they actually train these kids in what to do if you are confronted by a thief? The money in the register is fully insured. Just give them the bloody stuff!

Could be time to start enforcing the law of no helmets and face masks in convenience stores and banks.

By just giving them the stuff you encourage more robberies. This helps to make another less likely.

In Japan it's not unheard of for management to instruct employees to resist.

Saitama is back!

motytrah:

" In Japan it's not unheard of for management to instruct employees to resist. "

Really? I haven´t heard of that. Which management? I rather think the employer acted out of a false sense of honesty. Police, insurance companies, and employers all advise against heroics.

Employees are trained to hand over the money and THEN throw the paintball as the person leaves the building (and you can lock the door).

This employee must have thought he could take the robber / or at least fight him off. A mis-judgement in the end. Glad to hear the injury isn't too serious.

(I think I'd keep a broom handle, standing behind the counter - a nice long defensive weapon, to keep a knife beyond arms reach. Then, based on the apparent degree of crazy, could hand over the money or poke back. Just as likely I'd end up in the same boat as this young fellow.)

Wouldn't be surprised if local management duped this boy with all their usual BS about loyalty and responsibility and what have you and this guy thought he was doing a good thing, showing the employer what an ace empolyee he was.

But I could be wrong.

Another thing, this guy was 18? So he's not an adult, right? Yet he can sell cigs and alcohol? And be responsible for a convenience store? Something is weird here.

the standard criminal outfit and profile after a robbery in Japan: around 170cm in height, wearing a black down jacket, black pants and a white surgical mask.

Haha, yep, in Japan even criminals do indeed put their uniform on to go to work.

Could have, should have, would have. This guy is a hero to me. Its done and over with. Let the other scumbags know that money doesn't come that easy. I salute the store staff for standing his ground. Maybe the next scumbag with think twice. If everyone believes that every convenience store's policy is to just handover the money, more people will do it.

Always hand over the money.

The store worker is a hero.

technosphere:

" the store worker is a hero" "

Well, probably, but a foolish one nonetheless.

Like French Marshal Pierre Bosquet said after learning about the charge of the light brigade: "C'est magnifique, mais ce n'est pas la guerre."

If he was stabbed at around 8:00 p.m. it means he's making 800 yen/hr unless he's management. Not worth the money, but kudos to the employee for trying to stand up and stop the man. He should have crushed one of those tracking balls in the guy's face and just let him run out after. In any case, I hope the store honor's the employee and takes care of him.

Hope the kid gets a Christmas bonus and a raise for this.

This young part time worker may have been told what to do once or twice, but it's nothing like the full on training that bank staff get. If that training is thorough enough, most will do as instructed but anything less than that and people tend to act instinctively. This young man's instincts reflect well on his character, and I hope his company show appreciation.

Robber, brandishing a knife: "Give me all your money."

Conbini kid: "Sure, here you go. So... you get around a quarter of a million yen for 1 minute of work, while I get 950 yen for an hour of work... screw you!"

Never fight back, just run, run, run away.

That's ludicrous... His job is a Convenience Store CLERK, NOT a Policeman...

Thank you for proving my point... A complete lack of any common-sense.

When someone brandishes a weapon and demands money, You As a STORE Clerk, your only responsibility is for your SAFETY, and after that's assured, your next responsibility is to alert the Authorities... I.E... CALL THE POLICE... PERIOD... You're NOT in the military, you're NOT a Cop, You're a store CLERK...

Pretty simple common-sense stuff!

But its worth the cops life right?
