A 72-year-old man and his 72-year-old wife have been found dead in their home in Okayama, Okayama Prefecture, in what police believe was a murder-suicide.

According to police, the bodies of Kaoru Inoue and his wife were found by their 46-year-old son and his wife at around 7:40 a.m. on Sunday at their home in Higashi Ward, Sankei Shimbun reported. Police said the woman was slumped in a chair in the living room, with stab wounds to her neck, while her husband was found in the bathroom, also with stab wounds to the neck. A blood-stained knife was on the floor near him.

Police said Inoue and his wife were both declared dead at the scene and believe Kaoru killed his wife and then himself.

Police said there were no signs of forced entry into the house, nor had the house been ransacked. The couple lived alone but had both been hospitalized recently ― Inoue until Aug 21 and his wife until Sept 11.

Their son and his wife had come over to give them breakfast as the couple were having trouble looking after themselves.

This hits home for me, since my parents are around their ages. I'm always thankful for them and keep in contact with them. I also make sure my kids keep them busy. My parents love every minute of it. Too bad for this COVID pandemic has kept us apart, due to the return quarantine here in Japan. I'm just counting the days until the japanese government gets rid of this ridiculous quarantine.

Both had been in the hospital but had been released, suggesting that whatever they had been suffering from, it wasn’t life threatening. Yet curiously, within a few weeks they’re both dead. We’re told it was a murder-suicide, but the evidence that it was health-related isn’t clearly stated, although it’s implied. If that is the working assumption, it would’ve been helpful to have been given more information about the exact nature of the difficulties they were experiencing.

It seems as if the couple realized they were not healthy and could not live alone or without one another. It also appears that they did not want bother their son and his wife. Sad situation may they now have their peace.

It appears this may be the case. So sad they felt they had nobody they could rely on.

"A man and his wife..."? Some old-fashioned news writing here.

The events seem to indicate that dementia may have been a factor.

It’s a sad situation. As long as the police satisfy themselves no malice was involved, the details are nobody’s business but the family’s. Hopefully the parents can have some dignity in death and the younger ones can be left alone to grieve.

Seems this article covered just about everything, this time, on which readers could speculate for such an ‘incident’: “opportunity, means AND motive”.
