The other driver was likely going much faster than she expected, leading to her error of judgement. The fatal accident was further down the chain, where speed would still have been a factor.

doesn't matter if the other driver is speeding or not, and it would be almost very difficult to judge their speed after the fact even if it was a factor

it was her error in judgement that cause the crash. if your unsure of the speed of on coming traffic and have any doubt if you can make the turn then you wait until all vehicles have passed.

Translation: The on-coming driver (in the light 'K'-vehicle) was very possibly speeding. Another factor to be considered is the drivers' relative ages: the K-driver is in her sixties and therefore senior to the unfortunate Ms Shintate. Police may have accepted that driver's story at face value, based on traditional senpai - kouhai relation.

I never understood why the word of the defendant's regret was taken at face value here. So many times a perp gets a light sentence because they "expressed regret" or "explained how they didn't mean to cause harm" or some other nonsense. Why in the world do the judges just take these comments at face value and assume that these people aren't so bad based on some bold-faced lies?

No-one deliberate crashes in situations like this. She thought she could make it, as she always turns right there and she knows the average speed of cars on that stretch. Her brain was probably in default mode. The other driver was likely going much faster than she expected, leading to her error of judgement. The fatal accident was further down the chain, where speed would still have been a factor.

With this niggling at the back of her mind, I can imagine she was somehow hoping that the judge might take this into consideration.

WHY THE HECK should the other driver slow down when he had the right of way and was no where near the victims? SHE should have slowed down and NOT turned right and waited until the other vehicle passed.

Ain't nothing going to happen to her or that guy who was speeding and killed that mother and daughter leaving a grieving husband to plea with the government to change the laws when it comes to old people driving. Simply because.....they're seniors.

Some people go through life not acknowledging that they should bear responsibility for their actions. I wonder if it is because of a difference in how their brain was wired at birth, or if they were raised to think that way.

She turned against oncoming traffic too early and caused an accident-a clear case of misjudgment.
