Whether you like it or not Japan is far safer then any country in the world.
Christina Tsuchida
The proliferation (compared with say USA TV reporting) of crimes reported on the news in Japan is really a sign that these crimes are exceptional to daily life. Time was--I cannot speak for the US nowadays--when that country [the only other one I know] DID NOT PUT CRIMES ON THE NEWS BECAUSE THEY WERE TOO MANY.

Which can be taken to mean, coming from you anyway, that Japan isn't.
In many ways Japan is far from an "international society" the charm of inaka and the culture helps give the impression that people here are outdated, backwards, and less prone to committing crime.
We all know otherwise, and any person with even half a brain can figure out that even if the numbers may be falling, there is still far too much crime in this country.

How many people tried to make reports but the police were unwilling to open one. Just like Jinc accounting, its all cooking of the books and superficial pap as ever.

There's lots of Police in Japan.

Correction: REPORTED crime. Big difference.

If you read the following sentence, it explained that was because the laws were revised to allow for easier prosecution of sex crimes.

"did they go around knocking on doors asking people if they have committed crimes? Seems like the govt here uses this technique for most of their stats"
Wow! Do they do that in your country?
Or any other country for that matter?
Gaijin once again denying the undeniable; that their own countries are far more dangerous than Japan; even if they were to massage the statistics (like they claim Japan does),they(gaijin) would still come on top regarding almost every crime.
Only a fool would pretend that the crime rate in Japan is so "creatively managed" so that they can pretend that there's no more murders/robberies/rapes, i.e. any felonies known to man (and beasts), than in the US, Canada, Britain, Australia, South Africa, China and any other major place on this planet.

Nothing and no place is perfect, but for a nation of over 100m it is quite safe in comparison.
I would venture to say its got more to do with people here and their general inclinations and low crime rate than a government success story.

"there are tons of crimes that go unreported many know that the legal system is a farce, a waste of time and money, victims never get justice or fair compensation, perpetrators are treated leniently "
Don't be so hard on the US or the UK at least you are international society.

These statistics are meaningless when you look at the recent headlines involving random stabbings and other sorts of crimes happening everyday in public.

Less than 20% of rapes are reported in Japan. This metric alone shows how unreliable the crimes statistics are in Japan and I don’t see how they can be taken seriously. In addition to that, in a country where the mafia has still a lot of power, just look at the so called illegal prostitution to convince yourself, the all idea of low crime in Japan is a strange concept.

There were over 10.6 Million in the US in 2016 alone!
Wow, Japan is doing a great job fighting crime! Thanks NPA, but wait, there are still nearly 400,000 crimes a year or roughly 1,100 per day, or roughly 23 per prefecture daily. And all these reports state that Japan is a "safe" country?
Relative is a convenient word!
Japan is safer than many countries, but anyone who thinks for a second that there aint no crime.....better get their heads out of the sand!
The numbers are dropping for a number of reasons, and there needs to be more information provided to make any valid determinations as to why.

Relative one day a child is raped and killed, next day a boy with body parts stored in ice boxes, group suicide, then schoolchildren dead doing group activity. Suicide from overwork not usually reported. Mummified remains. You really are pushing the envelope on safe Japan.

Thank you NPA. You are doing a great job. If these numbers hold up Japan will have 800,000 crimes for fy 2018.

The headline seems all rosy until you get to this little one liner.

News reports are not a good source of actual statistics. News reports are designed to titillate and frighten people. Turn off the TV or internet and go for a nice walk. Be glad Japan is a relatively safe country.

You wouldn't have guessed it from recent headlines. Awful lot of stabby stabby lately.

The first few words of this article says it all. number of "recorded" crimes. My news sources seems to say something else. Gotta make Japan appear safe to boost tourism.
