Thank goodness the baby is alive and hope she lives. I think the mother should be put in jail and ordered to read books about raising a child and not throwing them away as if they are garbage . Wow and winter is just months away thank Goodness or the outcome could have been different

People need to remember that mental illness can have a profound impact on new mothers. Depression and other mood disorders become more common during pregnancy. Mental illness can develop during pregnancy and lead to these kinds of things, and giving birth can actually trigger it because of the major shifts in blood and hormones that occur during labot. Japan has a poor history of adequately addressing mental illness in a way that makes it acceptable for people to seek help. Baby hatches, safe haven laws, only work when women are able to make morally responsible decisions. Mental illness can change that ability. And people don't go around TRYING to become mentally ill. It is just a fact of life. But not having society be more supportive of mental illness is part of what drives these kinds of situations. When people belittle or express anger towards the women who suffer these problems, it only makes it that much harder for women to be able to come forward and ask for help. And it is an unfortunate fact that there are men who take advantage of mentally ill women. Shameful, but just one of the other many problems that get covered up and ignored all too often. Not all pregnancies occur from consensual relations.

How does a woman carry a baby for 9 months then just throw it away like a used napkin? How does a woman have the energy after delivering a baby to do all of this then go on living their life?

I wish I could answer those questions for you but it beats the hell out of me.

In the US and UK we have an equally bad issue with teenage/unwanted pregnancies. But we rarely hear of dumped babies. The stigma is different in society here, and more resources are available. Heck, in the UK being a teenage mother almost seems like a badge of honor, alongisde your ASBO. But there is a big controversy going on now in the US where some people want teenage girls to be implanted with IUDs, in addition to using condoms to prevent pregnancy. The statistics are that 80% of teenage pregnancies are unplanned.

Remember that there is also a "father" out there equally responsible for this precious child, even if he was uninformed. Both should be held liable. What a tragic beginning for this baby.

HonestDictator: I think all potential parents everywhere in the world need proper sex education. I hear this kind of disgusting news happening all over the place: from unwanted babies left in Japan, to dead infants found in homes and fetuses in toilets in the U.S., unresponsible people are unfortunately everywhere.

Baby hatches, people! baby hatches!! The the gods the person at least had the decency to leave the infant in a place where it would be found and not in a coin locker or dumpster or something. I hope this baby finds a loving home, and my thanks to the people that found her. Oh, wait... just reread before posting and see that the baby was found possibly inside the residence of the person that ditched her. In that case, even more shame to the person that threw her away, and even more thanks to the person who called the authorities.

It's so saddening that these kinds of incidents are so common in Japan. At least this baby is alive, I suppose, but if the baby had not been found so quickly it probably would not have lived through the night. It seem that pet dogs get more live and affection than new born babies.

An earlier article about a woman leaving a dead baby at a "baby hatch" indicates such facilities exist in Japan. In the US, the "Baby Moses" or "Safe Haven" law exists in all 50 states, and unwanted newborns can be left at hospitals, fire stations, police stations or other designated areas on a "no questions asked" basis, i.e., without penalties.. Are baby hatches located through Japan? If not, they should be, with lots of publicity given to location, procedures, etc. Widespread knowledge of the existence of "baby hatches" would minimize incidents such as this and save the lives of many unwantedabandoned newborns.
