There are no safe portable devices running iOS or Android in popular use today.

In short, don't put anything sensitive on any smartphone or tablet. Do not connect to any sensitive systems using these devices either.

Apple makes all sorts of security claims, but this doesn't solve the 3rd party failures. Effectively, it is all advertising. 1 bad app loaded on the device or bad advertiser on the phone opens any content on it to the world.

The same applies to Android devices. 1 bad app or bad advertiser and all security is lost.

Free training is available with step-by-step how-tos for breaking applications on Android and iOS platforms using free or less than $30 tools. A 15 yr old can follow these instructions.

None of this is new. It has been a known issue inside the smartphone industry for 5+ yrs. They don't see a viable solution and don't want their revenues to end, so nobody credible says anything. Though I suspect 95% of the users are too addicted to change their terrible security habits on these devices.

Third party failures are extremely rare with Apple, due to their vetting process that is required to get the app onto the app store. And since apps can only be downloaded from the app store, all apps are thoroughly vetted.
