Recently, I often hear that the Work-Life-Balance is important or we should spend more time at home than at work place. But when I face the fact like this, it feels like spending time at home is not always correct for fulfilling life. It’s sad and ironic, I think.

Spending more time at home while employed and well-off isn't the same as while unemployed, especially in the time like this pandemic.

DV in Japan is due to small home, the wife is not use to the husband being at home during the pandemic. They are not use to communicating and feel as though each other is taking up space which make them irritable they normally didn't have to share because the husband was at work and the wife taking care of the children and running errands and now both have found out they have to change their routines. Time and space could be the issue also money!

If a couple makes it through this Pandemic they have passed the ultimate test!

A ’fair’ observation @Sal Affist 5:03pm:

- “...some context. Not all of these are physical abuse. DV to the J mind includes arguing & raising voices at each other. A loud quarrel is DV... do not let the increase in numbers make you assume all were for physical violence.

However, You would also acknowledge, and hopefully, agree “verbal abuse” is also a form of DV, often resulting in, and possibly accounting for, the significant increase is bullying and suicides?

Afterall, bullying is a learned and transferable, dysfunctional behavior. Inter-family DV, both physical and verbal abuse internalizes hostilities and fosters the victimization of perceived ‘weaker’ individuals when children exit the home. This cycle has to stop within the families first.

What do you expect if the bureacrats destroy businesses and shut down all actities, sending people to be cooped up in their small apartments?

-5 ( +0 / -5 )

The article requires some context. Not all of these are physical abuse cases.

Domestic Violence to the Japanese mind includes arguing and raising voices at each other. A loud quarrel is DV. The posters above noted why disputes were more likely in 2020, but do not let the increase in numbers make you assume all were for physical violence.

Not having enough money usually leads to stress...

I'll bet it was highest right around the time the stimulus money got released.

*It’s probable* @noriahojanen 10:53am that *there is ‘a greater majority’ of DV cases that ‘continue’ to go unreported due to* *Japanese societal ‘abnormalities’* (not, societal ‘norms’) *like “gaman”, inter-familial ‘responsibilities’, community ‘shaming’ and the persistent taboos and peer-pressured stigmas of seeking help for ‘mental health issues’*:

- @noriahojanan 10:53am: “It is plausible to assume that they had remained unreported or under-reported.” -

Understood:

- “Thus one can’t rush to conclude the # of DV cases have signif. increased recently due to the pandemic.”

Well, it’s a ‘step in the right direction’ IF Japan is, at least, acknowledging some of their DV issues and not trying to attribute them to the pandemic, the increased need for “remote work” and other ridiculous ‘excuses’.

Individuals’ need to responsible and be held accountable for their ‘individual’ actions against others.

It’s “news” Japan has such a 24 hour ‘help-line”.

Btw: Does anyone have the number? (It’s not still not posted or referred to within the article.)

Refreshing to see Your “friends & acquaintances” have switched from their routine ‘victim blaming” @gaicuckojin 9:29am:

“I blame this on the size of habitations, ... increase the space and you’ll see a bunch of social problems plummet“ -

... as “their” previously-proposed causes of ‘sexual, physical and domestic assaults’.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

The increase in the number of people seeking help is also believed to be attributable to the launch in April last year of a 24-hour service to accept consultations by phone and online amid the pandemic.

Thus one cannot rush to conclude that the number of DV cases have significantly increased more recently due to the pandemic. It is plausible to assume that they had remained unreported or under-reported.

make divorce easier and maybe DV will decrease

(DV is easy, but the man must pay and kids are a problem.)

7:30pm last orders has driven us to drink strong cheap alcohol and food from combini or supermarkets, as opposed to watered down izakaya drinks and delicious food.

how does this stop virus.

Covid restrictions, economic problems and staying home in tiny houses have certainly increased the stress and tension within couples and are factors leading to. But at the end of the day, people themselves are the one responsible. Why does it get to DV. Inside that persons, something was not going well especially if the relationship was already tense, but many realized they are not fit to be 24hr with a partner. Many workers are coming back late, so only the weekend was ok, but now, if everyday together, it does not fit. In the same time, that’s true for women too and some prefer not to have their husband at home for long. This state of life has been broken by the covid and they can not adapt to new changes. To summarize, if DV arises since and due to covid, those couples were not happily living together well before that, but accepted it, they don no accept it anymore

Not surprising. With stuffed up covid policies, economy tanking and people tending to brain snap easily, you have a recipe for disaster.

As Tokyo, Osaka and seven other prefectures currently remain under the third COVID-19 state of emergency, an official of the Cabinet Office said people should not hesitate to use the public consultation services as domestic violence victims themselves are often unaware they are being abused.

Useless as usual. The greatest 'helpline' for victims of domestic violence are the economic wherewithal to escape an abusive household. This was found through UBI pilot programs.

Of course Suga and the LDP thought it was more important to promote tourism and eating out in a pandemic. And those companies receiving subsidies laid off travel agents and hotel staff and waitresses, increasing the stress in those families enormously.

Yet, We neglected to refer to include it here:

“... the new helpline, contacts to the counseling and support centers nationwide ...”

(again)?

4 ( +4 / -0 )

It is unfortunate but too many people depended on drinking parties to release stress and are becoming irritated and physical with the continuation of the state of emergency measures, some people are able to find new release activities that are not affected by the measures, but unfortunately not everybody can adapt this way.
