She remembers being injected by a man, the police, but not killing the pedestrian. How unusual...

Just imagine what would be the sentence if this was a 32 years old man???

This sentence is a very BAD and sends the wrong message to both the victims and the criminal sides in this case, this ruling should be APPEALD.

Here in Japan they would call a mercedes taxi a 高級車, it's the brand they are talking about, not the actual cost. Even a used Mercedes here would be consider one as well.

She bragged about the car and showed pictures on Instagram. It was a brand new AMG SL63.... google it if you do not not know that vehicle. NOT your local Taxi...

Japans first CRACK head just got off easy. She was driving an expensive Mercedese could mean she had money and she bought the best attorney money could buy and thats why she got off cheap! Caught with a crack pipe means she was a habitual user and it finally caught up to her.

I agree in principle, but in this case there was no chase. The police wanted to talk with her (people had been reported her as behaving strangely), and the jumped in her car and took off. The footage is probably still you Ytube.

The Mercedes involved in this accident has been reported as valued at "nissen man yen" (20 million yen) and the woman driving it was not the owner.

Maybe not so much. She lived in a 40,000 yen howel in Kawasaki, very much incongruent with the luxury cars that she posted about in Instagram. The Benz was most likely paid for by a boyfriend.

No, they are not to blame, not even a tiny bit. They were doing their job. You should read the article again and you'll see it was not even a chase.

Let's see...taking drugs, speeding, resisting arrest, dangerous driving, driving on a sidewalk, going through red lights, damaging another car, destroying a concrete wall, HITTING AND KILLING someone, lawyer lying about the circumstances, taking no responsibility. Five years. Light isn't even the correct word for this! Talk about a travesty and a miscarriage of justice! The judge should do fifty years for her then.

I agree. The verdict is lenient and unbalanced in reference to similar cases and precedents. The prosecutor should consider appealing to to the higher court.

They won't, because they only asked for 6 years to begin with. Definitely something fishy going on here.

I generally skew on the side of lenient punishments with a focus on rehabilitation, contrary to a lot of posters here, but even to me this seems excessively light.

I do hope she ultimately gets help for the drug issues, but that generally doesn't seem to be the driving force in Japanese correctional facilities.

This case really does check off a lot of "Oh this pisses me off big time" boxes.

Recklessly fleeing police? Check.

Violating numerous important traffic rules? Check.

Driving car on sidewalk? Check.

Doing 120 in what was probably a 40 or 50 zone? Check.

Driving an expensive Mercedes? Check.

Killing an innocent young women who had many years of life ahead of her? Check.

Showing callow indifference to the above killing by just running away? Check.

Being high on illegal drugs while doing all the above? Check.

Lying about being on drugs? Check.

We've seen people get 5 years just for drug offences here - never mind the driving offences and the manslaughter / murder.

I think 5 years is far too lenient given the details, but the nonsensical way sentences are imposed in Japan is scary. When two people can get vastly different sentences for the exact same crime, that's not good.

Justice system needs a complete overhaul, it is not a neutral system. It’s who you are who you know. Not what you did.

5 years. For killing a person with a car. Fleeing the police. I really feel that our justice here is like a playing dice - you throw, get a number, look up in the sky, then think of a number and sentence that person. No multiple sentence in this case.

@joey, it wasn’t really a chase. She sped off and they soon lost sight of her, whereas they found her disabled and abandoned car. She was caught on cc camera casually taking an elevator trying to make her escape.

Silly, silly woman, She is VERY lucky she only got 5 years. It's as if the victim's life didn't really matter that much.

Japan legal system is just crap!

I think the maximum sentence for vehicular manslaughter is 7 years.

It's much heavier. In this particular hit & run case (under influences), I think she's supposed to get 22 and 1/2 years.

zichi, thanks for the info. In the Japanese penal system, can sentences be cumulated? She did illegal drugs, lied, fled the police, reckless driving, killing one person.

Of course, the woman deserves a heavier punishment. But why was it necessary for the police to chase her. If they had the number plate details, they could have picked her up later. Perhaps too many US action films are interfering with sound judgement.

Obviously this person has NO RESPECT for the law or human lives. She runs away from a police officer, then reaches 120km/h speed kills a woman and destroys properties then hides, and then blames others for her actions and gets only 5 years in prison!??? is this a joke or am I reading it wrong?

You can buy a Mercedes here for around 1 Million yen, that is hardly "very expensive".

What an animal. Should have got 30 years. She will still be young when she gets out, and there will be few barriers to get back into her line of work. Sickening, when the innocent woman she killed will never have such freedom.
