Drug dealers forget their pot stash in rental car; ask agency clerk to not look inside

Japanese customer service has acquired a well-deserved reputation as being among the finest in the world. Even still, there are some requests you really shouldn’t expect companies to comply with, like the one made last month by a pair of men in the town of Izumo, Shimane Prefecture.

The two men, both 20 years old, had rented a car and then returned it to the rental agency. After they dropped the car off and left, though, they called the agency with an urgent message: “We forgot something in the car. We’re coming to pick it up, so don’t you dare look at what’s inside of it.”

It’s a command both suspicious and impolite, and so the rental agency staff promptly went to check the car. Inside, they found a sealable pouch, and inside that they found 15 bags of some sort of plant parts. Figuring the men wouldn’t have said “don’t you dare look at what’s inside” if these were just oregano packets, the rental agency contacted the police, telling them “While checking the interior of a car that as returned, we found what seem to be drugs.”

Although the two men had said they were on their way back to the rental office, the police still managed to get there first, perhaps because having already dropped off the car, the men had to walk while the cops could roll up quickly in their squad car. Once the men arrived, the police asked them to come back to the station, where an analysis was performed on the contents of the bags. Sure enough, they contained cannabis, roughly 13 grams in total, and the following day the two men were placed under arrest for possession with intent to sell.

One man admitted to the charges, while the other denies he was planning to sell the drugs. However, both of them did admit to the charges of being in possession of 2 grams of cannabis with intent to sell in the parking lot of an Izumo convenience store on March 7, the night before they returned their rental car, following their arrest for that incident, on March 29.

Hopefully this series of events will persuade the two men to give up their illicit business ambitions. Not only does the Japanese legal system not take cannabis-related crimes lightly, the two men also just appear to be really, really bad at it, as they’re now up to four times getting arrested while apparently not having made enough drug money to buy their own car.

Ridiculous reason to be arrested. Typical Japan.

It’s chopped green tea what’s the fuss when alcohol does more damage to society

Whoa. Total way to harsh your buzz, man.

To all the junkies popping out here like mushrooms after rain: don't forget you now live in Japan (if you do). The punishment for getting caught with drugs is pretty severe. Telling the judge that your ganja has less social impact than alcohol so they should let you walk might cause them to choke while laughing...

-3 ( +14 / -17 )

Subtle... They could have used more tact and simply omitted the "don't you dare look inside" part.

The J Judicial system where recreational drug use/possession is concerned applies the very definition of zero tolerance.

Cell doors are slammed and keys are thrown away.

Careers are cancelled, no manner a john/Jane doe or a tv celebrity.

When Pinky and Perky, aka Dumb and Dumber neglected to remove there stash from their rental car, they might as well have phoned officer dibble directly and claimed insanity.

Ever hear of a taxi?

Are you kidding? In Singapore that would get you a death sentence.

The story is like something Cheech & Chong might have come up with. Like, duuuuuuude, you left our stash in the rental car.

Pair of very intelligent young men!

“… the cops could roll up in their car,”

Very funny…. ; )

A rental Nissan March has to be the uncoolest dealer car ever. I'd want my man to have a massive blingy SUV with wheel spinners etc.

Diamonds in the back,

Sun roof top,

Digging the scene with a gangster lean woo-hoo-ooo!

The car filled with dope smoke in the first movie is hilarious.

A few years in the Big House - and permanent criminal records for possession and dealing narcotics. Stupid fools.

Always puzzled why folks don't just stick to alcohol. Legal, available 24/7 in Japan- and in most cases very affordable.

-2 ( +9 / -11 )

13 grams?! Bring out the Swat team! Shut down the bridges!

3 ( +5 / -2 )

Whoever wrote the story was probably stoned.... along with the "Japanese customer service" line which made zero sense as it pertained to the criminals. Heck... they hadn't even gone through the vehicle. Good customer service might have saved the guys. It is good that I don't often try to read JT often... I'd probably more miserable.

How do you say "Beavis and Butthead" in Japanese?

8 ( +8 / -0 )

Morons.

They need to start a "COPS" like show here in Japan.

Though, maybe more of the unintentional comedy will come from the cops themselves?

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Wow!

Possession of cannabis

It is sort of hypocritical that alcohol can be consumed in Japan until unconsciousness and that is legal

There are strange priorities in evidence here

Stop being a nanny state and legalize it already. Drunks every weekend cause more havoc than any so called "potheads".

Ridiculous reason to be arrested. Typical Japan.

Would be arrested anywhere on the entire Asian continent. Some of those places they would be seeing long sentences or death.

Ridiculous reason to be arrested.

plain and simple.

Would be arrested anywhere on the entire Asian continent. Some of those places they would be seeing long sentences or death.

Thailand leading the revolution for Asia, more will follow.

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

What is particularly irritating, these simpletons, lacking a brain cell between them, its the hard pressed/suffering tax payers that will have to pick up the cost of locking them up.

This could be handled in the community, make them both visibly work off there sentences.

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

"Don't you dare open it" is an invitation to open it.

Did the cops turn up in a squad car? Did they park it outside? It seems more likely they sent an unmarked car.

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

Stories in JT can sometimes make you laugh, and that's a good thing.

Thailand has it all over yet society has not collapsed

Quite refreshing to be able to choose another option to relax too

A cup of cannabis tea ensures a pleasant night’s sleep, I have found…

Lol those American junkies commenting here are ridiculous. Research shows pot damages teenagers brains, there’s enough reason to ban it.

Exactly. Probably the best comment on here.

Plus, look at the negative effects of legalizing pot in Colorado. They are numerous.

And don’t even compare alcohol, that’s just stupid.

That's right. Ever notice they never compare marijuana to sobriety? That's because they know marijuana would lose that contest, flat out.

You sure about that?

@Based

Did you have a sheltered childhood?

1 ( +6 / -5 )

Did I read/skim this article wrong, or was there only 0.13 grams of weed in each baggie? That's literally enough for one hit in a pipe. it would take like 3 or 4 baggies to roll a single joint. When I lived in Japan 20 years ago, I could at least buy a gram at a whack.... I don't get it.

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

Oh I guess I did skim it wrong. They had 15g.

So the law designates 2g as the threshold above which is intent to sell? Crazy. That's less than 1/8oz. Dudes who roll blunts can fit that in a single blunt.

Reads like cherry picked data to support a certain point of view.

Driving while impaired by any substance is dangerous...

The medical section is lacking details

Curious how many suicide toxicology reports show alcohol in the system.

Also I wonder how many alcohol impaired vehicle accidents or violent crimes committed while alcohol impaired.

And don’t even compare alcohol, that’s just stupid.

yep I agree absolutely stupid as cannabis is a safer, healthier choice.

0 ( +5 / -5 )

they contained cannabis, roughly 13 grams in total

Oh my, they found a major drug operation, LOL

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Tsk tsk. Maybe they will learn to be more polite in the future.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

"15 bags" "13 grams" ??????? 『 (◎-◎;)

Dealers commonly use 'dime bags' which are normally half a gram, so perhaps the bags were a little larger or they packed them really tight. I don't think 15 Zip-lock bags are going to fit under the seats in a "sealable pouch" as the article states.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

It must be 13kg, otherwise, why they would be arrested for few grams of tea bags. It’s nonsense to make these substances illegal. It’s just helping bad people to earn money and increasing prices.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

………so don’t you dare look at what’s inside of it.

Language usage here is deplorable. Whatever other punishment prescribed, a refresher course in elementary courtesy will help their chances of not sliding into recidivism.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

13 Grams makes them "Drug Dealers". 1 / 2

0 ( +0 / -0 )

While I think legalisation is better, the fact is that it's illegal currently and strictly enforced. It is what it is. Don't be stupid.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

If it had been reported by rental agency in my country while required not to open that, they would have received a death sentence doing so. Fortunately, it was a prank by 2 Japanese clowns deserving prison.
