Eggs pelted at Suzuki's office after he apologizes for sexist jeers

About 20 raw eggs were pelted at the office of Tokyo metropolitan assembly member Akihiro Suzuki on Monday night after he apologized earlier in the day for making sexist jeers at an assemblywoman on June 18.

According to police, a pedestrian passing by the office noticed the eggs splattered on the wall outside Suzuki's office in Ota Ward and phoned the police, TV Asahi reported.

Police said they are investigating the incident as a case of property damage.

Civilised societies don't ... have capital punishment neither.

Japan is a civilized society, and has capital punishment, so it would seem you are incorrect.

"Civilized societies don't promote or use violence to make a statement, civilized societies use words and the vote.'

Civilised societies don't treat women as inferior or have capital punishment neither. I suggest you google 'suffragettes'. Deeds, not words.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

And the angry mob continue to be angry.

I am surprised by how many people here support the use of violence rather the use of the vote.

I am glad that someone has been caught and will be punished. Civilized societies don't promote or use violence to make a statement, civilized societies use words and the vote.

Throw the eggs at him, not his office. Geez!

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Screw the office, egg the idiot.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Thanks, Fadamor.....even hearing it was toilet paper, it don't not immediately register. I guess I am not only abbreviation challenged but also prank challenged. By the way, having lived in Denmark, your name sounds like the Danish word for grandmother on the father's side. Scandinavian by any chance?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

My question is were the eggs thrown because he made the sexist catcalls or because he apologized?

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Eggs are something you can eat. I don't like the idea of wasting eggs in order to make a political statement. Maybe many of you have forgotten that there are poor people in the world who can't have eggs. That was fun thing to do in America in the 70 and 80th in its highest economical power. Don't copy what Americans do. If making sexist jeers is not a gentleman's act, pelting eggs is also NOT a gentleman's act.

They caught a culprit.

Following Mr. Suzuk's apology, approximately 20 eggs were thrown at his Tokyo office Monday evening, police said. A 50-year-old man admitted to throwing the eggs, and is being charged with a misdemeanor, they said.

Police said they are investigating the incident as a case of property damage.

Actually they should be investigating it as a case of a representative of an oppressed group in Japan -- in this case women -- actually having the guts to show real anger against the old-man dominated Japan Inc.

Knox Harrington: "Archetypical, fake, Japanese apologizing, even a kid could sense he meant nothing of what came out of his mouth."

Agree 100%. It was the typical, fake, Japanese apology when caught after trying to hide what he/she did and then being caught. I honestly wish she would have slapped him in the face as hard as she could and demand he apologize on his knees. It would backfire for her, job-wise, no doubt, but she would rightfully be a hero while this moron Suzuki would rightfully be internationally embarrassed. It would be a YouTube sensation and she'd easily get a job with more power... or at least maybe more respect.

Smith in Japan, or anyone fluent in abbreviations. For the abbreviation challenged, what is TP in your comment?

"TP" is an abbreviation for "toilet paper". Like throwing eggs at buildings, "TP-ing" a house is a childish prank that causes inconvenience to the homeowner (in regards to the clean-up) while causing no real damage to the property. Rolls of toilet paper would be thrown in a manner that would have the roll un-spool as it flew through the air, leaving large streamers of toilet paper draped over everything within reach of throwing distance. Tress, bushes, fences, cars, etc. would be covered.

Ka_chan I agree with your statement.

What a waste of good eggs.......!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I bet the egg thrower is a bloke who is angry he apologised.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

@ka_chan

I think some of you think that the egg were for what he originally said or an inadequate apology. The way I read this is the egg are because he apologized.

You hit the nail on the head, other websites eluded to this possibility more clearly, and for us long time residents I agree with you because I understand the nature and mentality of this culture.

This guy was looked upon as a traitor to their cause of male dominance in this society, an issue thast needs more global attention.

BTW their cause gets deeper and this is just the tip of the iceberg

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Knox, did you also see the part about him plagiarizing academics (for Europe) and Wikipedia (for US) in the reports he submitted following investigative overseas trips.

The man doesn't know the meaning of the word shame. I feel sorry for his kids.

6 ( +6 / -0 )

Goodness, I just read that Suzuki is one of those loons that went to the Senkaku islands. This guy has NO credibility whatsoever and should vacate his place as a public official. We don't need people like him getting paid by the good people of Tokyo

1 ( +4 / -3 )

Were the eggs fertilised? Suzuki might not be so bothered if they were.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Dennis.

He gave himself up already.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

This Eggcredible! hope they catch these Egg terrorists! :P

1 ( +1 / -0 )

The meaning of apology seems to have broadened over the years. I though it meant to involve sincerity and a sense of regret for one's wrong doings but I guess just to say "I'm sorry" is enough for some. Go figure!

1 ( +2 / -1 )

This is too funny. I jokingly asked my wife last night if she wanted to pelt a local LDP office last night. Don't look at Fizzbit Tokyo PD, I don't live in Tohoku.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Somewhat ironically, of all the men who shouted, this is the only one who had enough integrity to show his face and apologize.

Suzuki has no integrity. His so called apologies were not honest, not a bit, and he does this only for the good of the Party - not because he believes in it. What a rotten place this is...:(

8 ( +9 / -1 )

Or has been picked up as volunteer for being a martyr by his political party...

Exactly. With the attention this story has been getting, someone was going to have to take the blame, or the whole party would have looked bad.

It's too bad it took the international media picking up this story for the local media to finally pay attention to this whole thing.

6 ( +6 / -0 )

why were the eggs thrown AFTER he apologized, not before? Is the incident about the comments or the apology?

0 ( +1 / -1 )

That's being rude to the eggs.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Somewhat ironically, of all the men who shouted, this is the only one who had enough integrity to show his face and apologize.

Or has been picked up as volunteer for being a martyr by his political party...

8 ( +8 / -0 )

This is not a yoke, I think you should show ID when buying eggs and also be held accountable for the damage they do. The thin shell of society is at risk when people start making omelets on buildings occupied by politicians who despise humans who have eggs naturally. It's all about the egg, and definitely no yoking matter. Register eggs before someone is hurt.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Seriously? You must have no life if you dedicate your time and effort to pelt eggs at a politician, its such a pointless gesture

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

Somewhat ironically, of all the men who shouted, this is the only one who had enough integrity to show his face and apologize.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Eggs for this admirable member of the society ?! That's unacceptable, the plebs has become uncontrollable !! We should put the finest Tokyo policemen to investigate and burn the culprit on Shibuya crossing !!

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Good eggs thrown at a bad egg. Suzuki is a hypocrite and coward - he only admitted that it was he who shouted the insults when there were recordings of the voice and it was suggested that they be analyzed, and this was almost a week after the incident and after he lied about it several times!. As for the other people who harrassed her, they know who they are as do many others who were present - I really hope it comes out. As someone else mentioned, Suzuki's website mentions about his plans for helping working women - his words are all fake and meaningless. I would gladly toss a few eggs at this guy, but sadly that wouldn't change anything. The views he has are not unique to himself - thats what most of the politicians actually think in Japan. They are doing sod all to actually address the real issues of decreasing population and impending economic meltdown. I'm usually optimistic about the future but I don't see much being done to actually improve things here... Rant over.

10 ( +10 / -0 )

With the egg already all over his face, I'm surprised he noticed.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

How convenient. This sounds like it was orchestrated by the LDP leadership, they probably had Suzuki do it himself, to redirect attention to this event and give reason for the other weasels who will not own-up grounds to keep silent. Next the leadership will rant about the dastardly deed and try to garner sympathy for these cowardly LDP members who are now in hiding and take some of the heat off both them and the party.

And if they didn't orchestrate the egg-toss they sure must be overjoyed by the news and are asking themselves why they hadn't come up with the idea first.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

About 20 raw eggs were pelted...

Good.

...a pedestrian passing by the office noticed the eggs splattered on the wall...

Let me guess - an old person? Who the hell would call such a thing in? Eggs are eggs. It's the rainy season after all.

Police said they are investigating the incident as a case of property damage.

I am so glad to see they take this heinous crime seriously. Hopefully they'll assign a dozen of their finest to this case so that the perp will be caught ASAP.

Seriously, I watched this joker "apologize" on the news yesterday. Archetypical, fake, Japanese apologizing, even a kid could sense he meant nothing of what came out of his mouth. The lady he apologized to looked like she wanted to punch him in the face, and I can't blame her. Suzuki and his ilk do not belong in public office and he should removed swiftly. My guess is that he can't stand the pressure and will do his little bowing dance and dissappear from the spotlight very soon, probably hoping all will cool down aroumd him. My sincere hop is that it doesn't. I would also like to see the other scum smoked out soon.

13 ( +16 / -3 )

Do not waste our taxs anymore.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

He has a wife and 2 or 3 children. His campaign promises included "making a better environment for women to work in"

Maybe what he meant was "i will make better kitchens, because thats where i believe women belong"

15 ( +15 / -0 )

but I also hope it ends at this.

I hope it ends with Suzuki and the others who jeered being run out of office.

8 ( +10 / -2 )

Was it juvenile? Yes. Did it make me smile to read about it? Absolutely. Glad it was done, but I also hope it ends at this.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Love the right wingers on this site. Hate speech is okay, but egging a building needs an INVESTIGATION, god damn it! It was a non violent protest. Should have been done a better way, but the point was made - women aren't happy with this bloke.

16 ( +17 / -1 )

Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned

or in this case

Hell hath no fury like women scorned

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

Boiled eggs better.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Ka_Chan: It appears YOU are the only one that figured out the reason it was done.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

sorry but this is as equally sophmoric as suzuki's actions. you don't win the argument by lowering yourself to his level. you win the argument by electing someone else if he doesn't resign. you win the argument by elevating yourself and taking the high road like shiomura has done. she is class personified.

4 ( +9 / -5 )

I bet this incident is forgotten by next elections, and this guy is voted in again. A lot of Japanese guys i have spoken to seem to find nothing wrong with what he and the others said. Proof women dont belong in politics apparently.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

On the one hand, I agree that vandalism is bad and people shouldn`t be throwing eggs.

On the other.bif you absolutely have to throw eggs at something......I can`t say that I disagree with the choice of target.

7 ( +9 / -2 )

I think some of you think that the egg were for what he originally said or an inadequate apology. The way I read this is the egg are because he apologized.

5 ( +10 / -5 )

...groan...

sexist bullying turns into...purposeful reflection and some positive changes. Just kidding, it turned into yet more bullying....

sigh...

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

Throwing eggs is a stupid reaction. If the person is caught, they'll be disgraced, probably lose their job and may even face charges. Dumb.

-6 ( +5 / -11 )

Whoever did this needs to be caught and face justice. I think cleaning the building with a sign will deter this kind of assault.

BluesReeJun. 24, 2014 - 12:30PM JST Police investigating? Narrow the suspect down to the female population of Tokyo, and probably a fair proportion of the men too.

We never know who did this until they are caught. Hopefully the police will apprehend the miscreant(s) as soon as possible.

Police said they are investigating the incident as a case of property damage.

few stains were seen on PM Abe's poster as well (next to Suzuki's poster), so that too should be investigated.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

was it only him? tv stations should do a voice analysis. i'm sure they have tapes on all these politicians from sometime or another.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Police investigating? Narrow the suspect down to the female population of Tokyo, and probably a fair proportion of the men too.

7 ( +8 / -1 )

Good!

I bet the ones who threw the eggs were, gasp, Japanese!

8 ( +10 / -2 )

i'm quite sure there were some others who laughed and said a few words when Suzuki made the remarks.. where are those people? are they going to come out as well??

12 ( +13 / -1 )

And quite right too. Let's hope he takes the hint and retires from public life.

7 ( +11 / -4 )

After this incident, he deserves to be pelted. If I'm not mistaken, he hasn't booted out himself yet, has he?

11 ( +12 / -2 )

Police said they are investigating the incident as a case of property damage

To the eggs? They were a donation. And hopefully rotten.

22 ( +26 / -4 )

Darn... They didn't have enough time to TP it after!
