An elderly couple was found stabbed to death on a street near Nagaokakyo city hall in Kyoto Prefecture early Wednesday, and police are currently on the lookout for a middle-aged man who they believe committed the crime.

A local resident notified police around 1:30 a.m. that he had seen a man and a woman collapsed on the ground and that a man had been kicking the man. The couple was rushed to the hospital with severe injuries from stab wounds and died soon after, police said.

According to investigations, the victims were a 65-year-old husband and wife who had gotten into an argument with the suspect at a nearby drinking establishment. Eyewitness reports state that the suspect was in his 40s with a slightly heavy build, and he was wearing a white shirt at the time.

This means he was carrying a knife, I guess...

Makes you think! Having words with someone, alcohol exacerbating things, and ending up dead just as you are about to start enjoying your retirement years. This is so sad. Just horrible.

I used to always point out encroaching anti social behaviour. in recent years however I am more of the mind that it's better to turn a blind eye and not get stabbed to death by one of the many explosive lunatics on the loose. sorry state of affairs but get one of these idiots riled up, rolling his 'r' s and squaring his shoulders best to just walk away and let the little man think he's big.

Let me guess, he was angry at his work and his life

Welcome to 'safety' Japan where 30% of the population are certified loons and the other 70% are on the edge of insanity.

My Mum just said she would like to take umbrage at the description of a 65 year old couple as "elderly"!!!

The lesson of the day is - walk away from a dispute. Or watch your "6" (watch your back). Alot of men carry knives.

They carry knives because they have the courage of a mouse.

I'm guessing he was unemployed and angry at his life. Stabbing season is well underway.

I'm gonna take a punt on a 3-year suspended sentence due to "extreme provocation" of this heavy-set salaryman from the elderly couple. I'm starting to think like a typical Japanese judge now!

Alcohol... arguments... weapons... a deadly combination in any country, let alone one like this where people seem too tightly wound up and snap over simple things to commit murder.

Sad story. I would think it would be pretty easy to track the guy down. Go to the drinking establishment first and foremost, and ask the owner(s) if s/he (they) knew the victims and/or the suspect or can even identify him and describe the suspect to someone who can render him. Put out the picture in the media and track him down. Even if he DIDN'T end up doing it, or claims so, they can still haul him in for questioning.

Anyway, RIP.

I disagree with 65 being 'elderly'..

..but the crime is awful. If the suspect and victims were regulars at this drinking establishment, hopefully the cops will nail him.

Yet again JT misuses the word "elderly". 65 is only just the age of retirement in many countries, it's still quite a few years off elderly. I don't get why this site so often has to tack it on to mentions of people over about 55.

it was their son in law that did it. look at yahoo.jp. still no info on the motives etc though

IF he was a son it would appear to be a domestic dispute that continued in the bar. Probably one of the first generation of freeters told to get a job once too often.

Their daughter is missing. They argued with the son-in-law, a Korean Japanese. Keep posted for updates.
